Default 96 Grand Am drill out ignition lock

lock is jammed and key won't insert. I hunted all over to find the correct instructions to drill out the lock but all instructions I found seem that the lock they are describing is not the same. I attached a photo from the dash side facing toward the rear of the car. The red arrow points to the release tab. Instructions I find say I should drill 10mm from release tab toward key into plastic. Theres no plastic.. its all metal. breaking the spring for the tab is what I'm supposed to achieve. I don't want to damage the lock to bad since I need to reinstall it if I can get it to stay in the on position. I will disconnect the switch and disable the passlock. The owner of the car is homeless.. I just want to get it drivable again for her so she can put her life back together. I will buy a new lock for it with my money if I can't do as I wrote above. I'm sure the key is correct

From your picture, it looks like you started to drill in the correct spot, I would have drilled a pilot hole first, so the drill doesn't travel on you.....you will drill through the outer casing and then through the spring, and then you hit the lock cylinder(stop),,,,with the spring tab broken, should pull out......no there is no plastic.....

I did drill a hole being 1/8 from the button towards the key. Hole is 1/4". It did not drill the spring in 2 since the spring moved to the side of the bit. It did almost part the spring. I looked carefully in the hole and saw it so broke it with a thin awl. If you can remove the part of the broken spring wire (its not a coil spring) it will leave its position inside the button...that is what holds the button in and prevents it from being lifted out. Remove the spring wire and then remove the button. Now the lock will come out. I removed the button with the awl but find your own best way to get it out.. crazy glue on a toothpick or a magnet or whatever. Thanks to tech 2
