Doing Lower Intake Gaskets on 97 Grand Prix Series 2
THe guy at the part store asked if it had the pins to hold them in place or not, can someone please answer this question in the next few minutes, i would like to buy the parts tonight.

well i talked to an ASE certified mechanic and he told me that due to when the car was made, it is a 2nd generation gasket set. This job will be started after the car is cooled tommorow and taken apart and finished and put back together saturday morning. all gaskets and such are gotten, and my back is ready for the painstakingly hours of bending over the engine bay to repair it. Ive done the upper ones already, its the lower im goin for and after that i am going to flush the radiator and fill it again. Wish me luck!!!

I see you are working on a Series II, I will assume it is an L-36. If so, have you read the article in Techinfo? http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...e=article&k=38
The side rails in the engine block were changed to add locating holes for the rail seals under the LIM in mid-year '97, but the newer gaskets with pins can be used on the earlier L-36 with no problems, the pins just hang out over the side.
You mention you did the uppers, but there is only one UIM gasket under the upper intake manifold on an L-36. Not exactly sure what you are referring to here, but if you read the article above, it will fill you in the fixes you need to do for an L-36.
If you are draining the coolant anyway, I would suggest you do not refill with Dex, instead use "mixes with any type or color" coolant. When you refill the coolant, follow this procedure to minimize trapped air. http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...=article&k=100

Wes, are you saying you had to break off the black plastic piece with the locating pins that are molded onto the orange rubber side rail seals shown on the left side of the photo below?
If so, that is new information. Others with older model blocks (see difference in photos below) have been able to install the new-style side rail seals with pins with no problems.

yes bill, i mean the ones pictured on the left and right. the orange and black end seals. My block looks like Dons(Jr'*). I had the fel-pro kit. when i tried to set them on the block, they didn't sit flush. but i just grabbed the plastic guides with pliers and twisted. they broke off nice and flush.

You don't need to do that. You had the rails on backwards. They fit worse one way, and correctly the other way. The second design works on either application. The tabs aren't even touching anything on the earlier blocks.
