A buddy of mine had a 3.9L dodge with a 40series. I could hear him getting off the interstate from my house. It would shake the windows of my house. Too loud. waay too loud.

Yeah my dad has 40s on his Vette and my bro has em on his 65 Mustang. They sound great on V8s, but I think they would sound too much like a truck with glasspacks or something on a 3800.
80s sound real nice, without being over the top. Actually another thing to consider is the drone mufflers create on the highway. The drone of the 80s is noticeable to the point of being annoying, I imagine a 40 would be unbearable.

ok 80 series it is. but i was also wondering what effect the tips you put on have on the sound. i looked on fearthepearl.com and i listened to the 2 flowmasters and one had oval tips and it was deeper and the other had angle cut and it was raspier.

I just had new muffler installed. I didnt like the sound of the 80 series Flowmaster. (not loud enough) The only other Flow master for dual exhaust I was told that will fit the configuration for the oe tail pipes was for a Camaro. I went with a IMCO muffler which was much louder than the 80 series. Nice deep sound. Didnt want the sound of a coffee can. Had to have custom tails though.

My recomendation would be to get the 80 series and a Magnaflow Hi-Flow cat.....But keep your resonator. If you wanna replace it too, Mangnaflow has a hi-flo resonator if I remember right.
