Default manually shifting

would anybody call it wise to manually shift this transaxle its a 92 se with 141,000 miles. i got on it a little today and at a rolling start of maybe 5 and i had to shut her down before i got up to 40 cuase the car in front was slowing down. but then i got on a open highway doign bout 50 and i floored it and it sliped out of overdrive and then down into 2nd which seemed like it took forever . would u think i would break this trans asxle manually shifting it at around 4500 maybe. i not racing it i was just seeing what its got for power i've always had v8 rwd cars this is my first v6 fwd car and this car got to last me bout 5 years i don't want to hurt it thanks moose

You do have better control over the shift points, but need to pay close attention to the RPM'*. Maybe its just me, but with that kind of milage, I would baby that tranny a little more. The fact that yours is running strong at that milage without (I assume) being rebuilt it good news.

You said you want it to last five years. Don't get me wrong, its not going to fall out while you are driving normally, but these transaxles can't hold up to alot of abuse. Especially the older 60 series. A rebuild will set you back $1500 or more. You need to decide if beefing up the tranny is one of the mod'* that you want to pay for in the next five years.

Was the 65 the last year of the "eye-brow" hoods, or the year after. In any case, cooool.
