intake options
ok if i ever run into some money that i dont know what to do with i might build a custom intake.but im not real sure how to go about doing it.
ok one option is PVC pipe, get that at ur local hardware store slap some clamps on and use the stock accordian tube.boom your done.oh yeah and remove the MAF screen right?
or i see a bunch of you guys have the nice shiny metal of some sort ones. how would i go about getting the metal and bending it like that and stuff. also what kind of angles are used and stuff. what im trying to say is how do you get the filter in the right position to get the most airflow.
and also are any of these knock off filters as good as a K&N i know theyre good but im afraid your paying for the name to some extent.
i know im gonna get good advice already so thanks in advance

PVC and the stock accordian tubes are bad ideas in the long run, as they add turbulence. This may prevent your car from idling right without the MAF screen.
Best option overall is the mandrel bent pipe, preferably in aluminum. It'* a matter of playing around with it. You'll probably make 2 bad ones before you make a good one. I know ADTR went through alot of pipe before release. Some of that was for bench-flowing, as well. He made several different diameters, bends, lengths, etc.

The gains you will get from leaving the stock accordian tube are inconsequential (with an aftermarket filter and pvc). Beleive me I have tried (as willwren can attest to ). I would either buy the ADTR intake, or just gut your airbox for now (free mod). Otherwise, you would need to make your own tube that can be put into place instead of the stock accordian tube (once again, not an easy task getting it just right).

The real problem is that you want only one bend, and it needs to be as gradual as possible, and the largest radius possible. You want that air coming into the TB as straight as possible.
This is more difficult to do on the L67, as the TB comes straight out from the SC, where the L27 and L36 upper intakes are angled forward towards the headlight, allowing for less of a bend. Go back to my original post on the ADTR intake, you'll see what I did to the reducer to make it fit.....

The other complication can be the double washer bottle for the 92-95 cars with the headlight washers. It restricts where the filter can be, which is why I searched so long for the 'perfect' filter to go with this intake.
Alot of develpment went into this. Both on the diameter, length, and the bend. I think in the long run, the length and diameter are equally important, with the bend radius being only slightly less important from a performance standpoint.

The Thrasher unit uses the stock intake rubber and this will not reduce the flow capability (create drag) if it is 4" the larger diameter will more than compensate for the drag and turbulence created by the ribs. I stole my info but i am sure someone hear can do the math and calculate drag. I will provide the info needed if I have to but really it is the temp that matters. Really it’* the TEMP!! This means extra flow is important but if it is too hot then wala you have either lost HP like the Cadillac’* do or you gain "cool" sound.
I like Hector so please note this is about the person who cannot afford to buy a intake or a person who does not want to. Any person who wants a custom unit can do so with flexible tubing or hard pipe. If you get exhaust piping bent use 3 1/2 so the inside diameter is large enough. Get a cooling wrap or ceramic coating on the pipe if you want it to retain the better temp that your CAI will offer. Ask Silverbullet about temp.
