Default General Performance FAQ

This is my response to a little PM banter going on behind the scenes with another member. Thought it might be good to post for the benefit of the club, and to open it up for any other opinions (you CAN argue with me ):

Ok, you talking about the 2 harnesses that come out of the nosedrive end of the sc? Under the small portion of the cover? It'* just plastic shielding that snaps over the wires (remove the old stuff first). Install the new wire loom (your choice of colors) in it'* place. You'll need 3 or 4 different diameters of loom to do the entire engine bay. I'm not done with mine yet. That loom also protects the wires. Somewhat from heat, but mostly from abrasion as the wind and engine movement try to wreak havoc on your harnesses.

My preference on plugs are the NGK TR55 V-Powers. Always had good luck with them, and NGK makes the AC Delco plugs, so it'* basically OEM. A few other guys are running these with no complaints. Stay away from Platinum plugs in a supercharged engine, and don't buy anything Bosch. The car will eat it up. NGK or AC Delco are best.

MSD coils are a bit 'hotter' than stock coils. Same price, too (comparing to www.gmpartsdirect.com ). I had a bad coil, and another on the way out, so I went with the MSD'*. More mid-range hp can be felt. With these hotter coils and my higher than normal boost levels, I may end up going one heat range colder with my plugs, but I'll have to leverage off the knowledge of others on that.

There'* several different ways to handle your intake. I wrote an article in Techinfo some time ago, with the help, experiences, and inputs of a few other members that covers the options pretty well. http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/techinfo/?article=40

The performance and efficiency (yes, you can have both) depend on which option you choose. Mine is the most extreme of all those options in the article, and I did it in stages from start to finish. Just like the article is written. Started stock, added a K&N replacement filter, then gutted and ported the stock box, then swapped it for the ADTR intake and cone filter (unprotected), and now have what you see in my signature. I'm getting about 30mpg with the cruise set at 70-75 on the freeway, and that intake setup has probably gained me 20-25 hp over stock, but this might not be true on all cars. Most of these mods go hand-in-hand. The amount of power I gain from the intake is related to my exhaust as well as my smaller SC pulley. Intake mods have a greater benefit for the SC models, as the blower is hungry for air. There are no issues with weather. Even if rain gets in there, it'* your friend. Water injection has it'* benefits. The heat shield can make a 5-10hp difference, and an efficiency difference. Another article I wrote that relates:
http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/techinfo/?article=32

As far as the SC maintenance is concerned, I'd do it myself. Most dealers won't want to mess with it, because quite frankly, there just aren't that many supercharged cars out there. For instance, in 1995, nearly 81,000 Bonnevilles were built. Only 4800 were SSEi'*. There'* another article for you http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/techinfo/?article=22

The dealer may not even bother to flush. That'* why it'* best to do it yourself. It'* easy, cheaper, and you know it was done right.

No sweat 'bothering' me. What you learn here, you'll pass on to the next generation. I wasn't always this smart myself! Another good resource for you would be SSEi95. He also has a 95 SSEi, and is building it well. He would be a good one to bounce ideas off to see if his advice is in line with mine. Get a second opinion.

Damn, how much hp do you have now? I wish I had a SC so I'd get more power from my intake. But I still need a heat shield so that will help when I get it. That 5-10 hp difference for the heat shield...is that with a Supercharged engine or N/A? Or would N/A gain about 5-7 while SC gains 8-10?

The amount gained is just an estimate. I don't have anything to back it up.
Usually the amount of hp you can feel by 'the seat of your pants dyno' is in the 5-10hp range.

That'* a pretty good writeup, but it doesn't provide actual numbers gained.
