Default Inexpensive Tweeks and ?

Hello,

I just bought a totally Stock 2002 SE with 67900..I am currently getting around 25 miles MPG'* generally drive around 65 or so on the back roads and 80 on the Expressway. I am going to start out by changing plugs. In review of all I have read going to use the NGK TR-55'* are these OK on a TOTALLY Stock Applications?

Second.

We are on a tight budget, and like everyone want both better performance along with fuel economy improvement'*. Should I change out the Thermostat?

Last.

How much would cold air intake help and is the Rice burner option a good one?

Hi Jasper, and welcome to BC!

Wow! Sorry that we missed this one for so long...

Anyway,

Yes, the NGK TR55s will work fine in your stock set up. Just use the .060 gap as set from the factory (double check to be sure).

The thermostat change to 180* Stant (brand) is a good idea, though I'm not sure how much mileage will benefit. The change will help keep the average temps down on your plastic upper intake manifold, which is a good thing.

The CAI mod is a good idea that will net you some increase, though I do not know of anyone here who has dynoed to verify how much. The rice pipe version is one of the better methods out there, though for your year, many consider the fender well intake (FWI) to be a better option.

There a number of ways to do the FWI and I suggest you do a search on it to satisfy yourself, but one method is to buy the kit complete from INTENSE performance.

Actually...being an 02, your intake is already into the fender area. If you open the airbox, and look at the baffling. You can remove some of the plastic baffles with a dremel etc to get a little extra w/o purchasing anything except a K&N panel filter (Walmart)
