It'* been done a lot. You need a new output shaft, HD diff, and HD diff cover. That'* it. If the gear ratio changes then you will need to have the tune adjusted.

We hear a lot about upgrading to the 4T65E-HD, but is it possible to upgrade a 4T60-E to a 4T60E-HD? If so, would it be the same three parts?

You can do the shift kit without touching the differential, and you can change the differential without touching the transmission pan. If you do the top swap, you can run on a non-HD transmission without a problem (until the differential snaps).

As for the 4T60E question, that transmission is different, uses a different PCM and some more vacuum lines to run, and is old. I wouldn't use it in a car designed around the 4T65E.

Different PCM? What kind of different PCM?
More vacuum lines? My 60 only uses 1 vacuum line.

Well, the different PCM is the OBD 1.5 system that your car has versus the OBD II system in 96+ vehicles. However, the 96 cars came with 4T60E transmissions. It wouldn't be all that bad to use one of their PCMs, though it'* a lot of work to go down to it to use another trans in place of a 4T65E that someone already has. I wasn't sure on how many vacuum lines there are, but that'* still one more than what the 4T65E has. And thank you, you're right to question that since it was over-generalizing.
