I responded too this, but it didn't post, strange.

Anyway, in short, what I said was I didn't really care for the 700R4 in my '86 Custom Cruiser, and that I was considering this engine and transmission package from Pace:

PACE Performance -GMP-TH350290HP-K - Pace GM 290HP Base Engine with TH350 Transmission Combo Package

I don't think I could piece together anything that good for cheaper.

seems like alot when you consider the other better options. and stock trans are way different than one built by someone who knows what they are doing. the 400 and 700 both are slow junk from the factory. but after its built they shift hard, leave the line hard, etc.

after i had mine done it will chirp second if i get on it. and i had them make it so its regular auto in 3 and if i put it in 2 or 1 it stays there or goes there no nannies to save the engine. you can do that with a 700 or 350, the 700 has a better 1st for a big car like yours and od obviously means you can go with a steeper gear like 3.73 and it will still be decent for cruising.

Yeah I loved the overdrive, the '92 Caprice I'm getting has a 700R4, which is great 'cause it'* going to be the "Economy" car out of my two boats. I found out why my TH350 is shifting funny, it isn't the old petrified hose which I replaced, but that the barb on the back of the Q-jet is broken off so the hose can't stay put. I'm gonna plug that vacuum outlet, run a T off the vacuum advance line, and leave it like that until I swap the carb or entire engine. I'm pretty sure my transmission has a shift kit with the way it shifts when it'* working right, it'* quick and sharp, but not harsh. Also I need to clean my engine, it'* nasty, can't touch a thing without your hands turning black.

they dot run right with vacuum leaks either, i would replace all the lines.

I replaced a couple of lines when I changed the oil on Sunday, had to T off the distributor advance vacuum line for the transmission modulator 'cause the barb on the back of the Q-jet wasn't long enough (someone broke it off) to put a hose on, so I capped it. Car runs and shifts a lot better but the sudden cold snap around here has got the carb spitting and sputtering again.

I've got a line on a Holley Dominator (Firefox recommends I replace Dominator with Dominatrix ) intake, and the guy might have a carb and dis to go with it. I've been getting some arcing somewhere, either between the wires or in the cap, not sure, but I can hear it, I just can't find it. And I'm wary about looking for it, 'cause the last time I went looking for bad plug wires, I got the crap knocked out of me.

Either way, the Q-jet, spread bore iron intake, and Delco Remy distributor are coming off that engine this winter.

You mean the CFM? Have no idea, I think most Q-jets are 750, it'* just an old four barrel, nothing special.

Oh, I don't know, probably about 650CFM, that can easily feed a mild 350. I'm thinking a Holley, not sure yet though.

a 650 Holley would be a good setup for the street mild 350, just be a bit over carbed if you wanted to replace it on what you have now. but holley carbs are the easiest to tune by far. and when you have them setup properly it will get as decent mileage as a quadrajet, regardless of what the overcomplicated quad fans say. my uncle was one of the guys that tune the ones that came off the line for rochester and i still have one sitting on the shelf and a double pumper on my car.
