MSD ignition, is it good for L67?
hi,
last time i was at the dragstrip, ive talked to guy wit ha GTP that have a MSD ignition system. (it wasnt installed when i saw him, he got to remove it because he had a "shortcut " problem caused by a default in his car assembling,he was alwyas getting #3 wire malfunction...)
anyway.. he told me that the MSD igintion was making a very good difference and it worth installing it, but i dont see a member here with that in his sig,
i just want to know if its safe to install this and if it really worth it?
heres a link of what im talking about:

There'* a big difference between changing just the coils or the full-blown ignition shown in that link.
With the debut of the GTP in 1997, GM went with a slightly hotter coil on all 97+ including the SSEi. Changing the coils to the MSD 8224 would not benefit an L67 newer than 97, but would slightly benefit a Series 1 or an L36. The Series 1 and the L36 will benefit from upgrading to the 97+ Delco coils or the MSD 8224 (which are actually cheaper) with a smoother idle and a stronger mid-range pull. This would also be true for the older Pre-Series 1 3800'* who have converted their Magnavox system to a Delco II.
That full system will take some tuning. You MUST have a scantool to set that system up properly, and in my honest opinion, you'd have to have a pretty well modded car for that to benefit you. That'* alot of money for limited hp gain. Simply fiddling with the **** could retard you too much unless you know your KR values realtime. It might be better with the scan gauge Pdad is running (sold on INTENSE'* website).
It may benefit me on the 93 given my current issues (which are getting better, btw), but I'd rather find the root cause of my MILD KR at this point without resorting to a $400 bandaid.
I believe DrJay has something similar to this on his 93SSEi, or perhaps the MSD4 setup. It comes in handy with Nitrous, or at least did for the period of time he ran it on his car.

After market ignitions will not make more HP - absolutely not. How can it if the engine is not missing to begin with. "Hotter" spark does not make more HP or improve fuel mileage. If you're running high boost and the engine is misfiring, first reduce the plug gap as low as .035". If that doesn't solve the problem, then install a hotter ignition system.

Would a 97+ coil setup, or MSD 8224s show a noticible increase in my 96 L67? I have other mods that will be put on the car, and I actually have room left in my budget for something else. I would only do it if is beneficial or if it reduces KR. I already have new plugs and am going to buy new wires, any suggestions??

Speaking from personal experience, my 93SSEi had the same coils you have. One failed when it heated up.
I replaced all 3 with MSD'*, and noticed a smoother idle and a slightly more powerful midrange when compared to stock coils (I borrowed a coil from Jseabert while his trans was blown until my MSD'* got here, so I made an abrupt transition from good stock coils to MSD).
The difference was faint, but it was there. Personally, for the minimal gain, it'* up to your budget. Don't expect this to be a 'miracle mod'. Compare it to the Delco upgrade from the Magnavox setup from 87-92. Similar gains.
Most people would be better served upgrading when a coil fails. When the first one goes, do all 3. The MSD'* are cheaper than the Delco'*. Stay far away from the Accel'*.

can it do something for KR? add or remove?
i plan to go 3.25, so if it need colder plugs, why adding power to plugs?
or may be i dont have an idea of what im talking about..

No coils will NOT help you with KR. . . . ...Colder plugs will! I'm surprised that no one has questioned that maybe your coil(*) were on the way out theory to why you saw a gain with the MSD'*? Look at the two highest HP L67'* out there (Intense Turbo Car and Zooomer'* '97 GTP) - Both use stock coils (Nuf Said).
