A little help here
I have on '05 Impala SS that I was going to put a K&N intake on. But, after finding some information about the system, I am considering returning it. I was looking around on some blog sites, and some people were saying that this system would actually make the car slower because the filter element is not fully enclosed and can suck in warm air from the engine. I was looking at the pictures on the installation instructions and I am not quite sure where the warm air would get to the filter.
Instead of putting in the K&N system, I was thinking of making a FWI. What do guys usually heat sheild out of? How do you know what size of cone filter to use?

Most of us buy our FWI from INTENSE-racing.com and there is no heatshield needed. It pulls cool air from the fender.
What K&N kit are you talking about? A drop-in replacement wouldn't need a heatshield. The factory airbox will seal around it completely.
