The car'* pretty cool, decent condition in all, but a part of me wants him to blow it so he'll learn quicker. Otherwise he'll do it to his next car...even if it was another Sunflower

Hey.. you guys are all talking about people blowing their engines as they rev them to 6 grand.. but if you think about it.. say your cruisin around 160 -170(km'*) I havent checked but i think the car runs 4 to 4and a half thousand rpm'*.. is that just as bad? its not revved high but its a constant high rpm.. What do ya think?

I run 100mph at less than 3,000rpms...but whatever the rpms are I wouldn't go that speed for a long distance, or punch it up to 110 mph several times. It shouldn't be good for the engine if you do it on a routine basis, like my brother does.

I'll be supprised if you brother keeps that 3.1 together very long.... Most 3.1'* I now of by that year had a rev limiter.... You don't think that car may be chipped do you? Also is that a throttle body injected 3.1 or is that an MPFI 3.1.... If you get a chance look at the 8th didget of the Vin number... I'm interested in that vin code...
It'* definitely not chipped. The previous owner was an old lady...LOL. And my bro hasn't gotten one, solely because he knows nothing about modifying. All I know is that I've watched the Tac as it hit 6K, unless there'* a way to override the limiter...could it malfunction at all (Due to over-revving? ..LOL) I'll check on the VIN, but I think it'* the latter one.

Don, my bro'* not here..so can't check now. I'm pretty sure though that the Engine code is "T" for MPFI 3.1 That'* the only available one for the 3.1 according to the 1990 F-bird service manual. But I will check when he gets here anyway.

I agree.. Nothing better than putting th hammer down.. I find the series 2 loves to sit at around 90km/h then punch it.. it pulls to 140 150 easily... Playing around with 2L cars are even more fun... If you get ticked off.. just slow down to around 40-50 k.. then nail it... bye bye 2L lol.. Ever watch smokey and the bandit? VA VA VA VOOM!!!

When you rev without a load, there is a lot of force trying to rip the rod cap off of the rod. Especially when you let up on the gas and the crank is pulling the pistons around. When under load, the force goes the other way, to the other side of the rod bearing. I read this somewhere a long time ago. It makes sense if you think about it. I can't think of any reason the valvetrain would care, however.

Valvetrain items are what breaks the most when you rev from what i've heard.

Well, think of it this way. When not in gear (no load), you are able to rev the engine up VERY quickly (this will happen in just about ANY car). Think about when you are in park.... When you first start the car right? Yeah, try spinning the engine up to redline before the oil has a chance to coat everything. Also figure this.... althought the valvetrain is ABLE to rev to 5900rpm, it does so slowly. It isnt designed to do this back and forth within a second... Either way, the rev limiter is only for park and neutral. In drive, you can rev all the way to redline. Try doing a burnout. It doesnt mind getting to redline at all. Trust me. Of course, the 2nd gear auto shift (regardless of what gear you have the stick in) makes it hard to hold it in a burnout unless you have the power to feather the throttle in the high end.

Also, I would like to see a video of anyone "Brake Boosting" up over 4Krpm. Stock stall converters will not allow you to do this, and you should break the brakes loose well before that. I have tried, many a time. Either way, its a great way to blow your tranny up...
