Just got back from time trials on a stretch of dry highway south of town.

Outside temperature was 50 F.
3/4 of a tank of gas

The first few runs were difficult. It took a while to heat up the tires. All it would do is smoke and spin the tires all the way thru 1st gear.
Once I got the hang of it.....whoa. ...the times surprised the hell out of me.

For such a heavy car, it scoots along pretty good now.
I checked the cone and inside the CAI box after a lot of heavy running and it stayed a cool 60 F...(55 F at the end facing the fender openings).
I call it a box but of course it is only formed out of reflecto bubble insulation and aluminum tape. Matches my Silver car quite well. I also wrapped the 4" PVC pipe feeding the throttle body.

Before the Cone CAI mod, I was able to accellerate to 60 in 6.9 sec....the 3.4" pulley (30 hp) and flat style K&N (5 hp) accounting for the big gain over the original 7.5 sec time.

With the cone conversion alone the time dropped to 6.8 but when I measured the temperature at the cone it was a whopping under hood air temp of 135 F.

So I fabbed up a quick heat sheild using the reflecto wrap and dropped the cone temperature to around 85 F.
The time dropped to 6.7 sec.

Last week I did two further improvements.
I removed the MAF screen and did a better job of sculpting the box to seal it completely from heated underhood air. It mates nices with the underside of the hood. It now draws all of the air thru the 4 1/4" and 3" openings in the fender.

The results are as follows:

0-60 times ranged from a best of 6.4 to a worst of 6.6 sec.
I am bragging 6.5 sec

0-80 time of 11 sec

0-90 time of just under 14 sec.

So you do the math. What power gains to achieve an improvement of 2 tenths for a 3800 lb car :?:
The improvement from dropping the inlet air temp from 135 to 60 F is worth 7.5% of 270 hp = 20 hp by itself.

Well that sounds sweet. Although i have a GP i have a Custom intake and was trying to figure out some way to block the heat... your idea sounds good... even if my gains arent as good as yours, it wouldnt hurt to block all that hot air going in my intake. I already have hoses running from under my car to the intake and i could tell a difference from before and after. Hopefully this improves it some more. Good Job.

Check out the above link, it show some pictures. The Reflecto insulation is available at most hardware stores. The trick is using Aluminum duct tape. I improved it later by adding and trimming so there are no hot air leaks.

I have found that using this insulation is good for about 3 years. I use it to insulate the cold ram air intake on my '79 Firebird. The good news is that it'* easy to redo using the old one as a template for the new one.
The other trick is sculpting it to fit tight to the underside of the hood so no hot air is able to induct into it.
