Default Thermostat holes?

What is the reason other than cutting down on air pockets in the engine cooling system are the holes being drilled in the thermostats? Thanks.

Default

they allow a small amount of coolant to flow at all times instead of just when the t-stat is open....beware though if you have too many/ too large holes...the car may not ever warm up properly...
