If your car is already in good shape then you probably wouldnt notice much after a tuneup.

So a CAI and muffler are the only things that can be done for performance, other than a tune up? What about intakes or parts off of newer engines?

haha i have a funny story about plugs, my friend has a 95 explorer and he had the original plugs in it. he had never changed them and neither did anyone else before him who owned the car. his car did not accelerate at all, i mean if you floored it it felt like you slowly leaned on the gas. when i changed his plugs for him the pickup was amazing and when he floored it, it actually went. if you do not check all your stuff and get a tune up then you may have some lost horsepower that you can recover.

The TPS mod and MAF Screen removal are also good. I did the TPS mod 20 miles before my car'* 'resting period'.. and there was a big increase in throttle response.. she used to take a second to go from idle to WOT, and the TPS mod fixed that.. I don't think I went faster.. but I would suggest doing it. Plus the MAF screen removal, I could feel the difference in power in that.. MAYBE 5hp... but mine was kinda bent.
A good cleaning of the TB and IAC, and IAC Passage would be good, too. A can of seafoam engine cleaner.. 50% in the tank, 50% in the PCV valve. Does wonders.. I currently have my top end off, and everything seems fairly clean [for it'* age], and I think some [if not most] of it has to do with me using some Seafoam.
If you do the CAI [Cold Air Intake].. alone, I would switch to one heatrange colder plug [I like NGK.. so the TR55'*].
And even little things, like keeping your tire pressure at specs, and cleaning out your trunk will help you go faster. It'* the little things that count .
