Default Header Coating

I've already started the tear down on my engine, and although I am nowhere near finished even the disassembly, I am already thinking about the headers. I was thinking of header wrap.. but that stuff us UGLY. I am sure it performs good.. but I will sacrifice a few hp if that wretchedness stays out from under my hood. Straitor said header coating is $200.. I don't know about you, but that is too much for me. As I was thinking, I remember seeing 1800*F paint in JCW.. now, can I use this paint to help keep heat in by any chance? It intruiges me.. I may get it, just because it would make my headers pretty.. but if it has function to it.. I may want it all the more badly

Header wrap preforms better than ceramic coating. But it locks moisture in and over time destroys headers. BUT is you coat the header wrap w/ some sort of specific sealer type paint then it won't destroy the headers. The high temp paint isn't gonna do much if anything at all.

Damn, that sucks. Not worth destroying my headers for a couple ponies. I gess now my other question is can I remove the factory installed heat sheilds, and just paint my headers? I don't know how much the sheilds actually cool, but if they aren't significant.. would it be wise to just ditch them?

I don't think that it would be worth your while to actually take everything out just to paint them and gain a few ponies tops. It might be something to look at if your going to tear it down reguardless.

Paint isn't coating. It can withstand 1800* F before it changes, but it doesn't reflect heat like a ceramic coating would.

if you heat paint the manifolds, then heat wrap em, and paint em with the sealer you should be good to go

i dont see why heat paintin the manifolds would hurt, but if your not gonna heat wrap em, dont remove the factory heat shields

Eastwood has a good aluminized header paint that I've used a few times.
I've used it for looks mostly in the past. It is supposed to have heat dispersal properties though. It lasted about 4 years on a show car with tri y headers. Be SURE they are clean before you paint though. Even a fingerprint will cause the hightemp paint to lift after it bakes on.

Try
