the screen is used to straighten out the ariflow over the MAF sensor or it can get an accurate reading. only remove the MAF screen if you have a aftermarket intake on the car (rice pipe or the like), or a gutted airbox. some people believe that the MAF slows down the air, and others dont. there have been no factual proof that the MAF improves or hurts performance. some have experienced a rough idle upon removal
in summary, there is no proven gains with the MAF out or in

Couple of disclaimers first...
My engine is NA (No supercharger) and I am not sure of the differences between the 98 and your intakes, but....
I have had my MAF screen out almost since I bought the car, and I have had no problems what so ever. And it adds a bit of Seat of the Pants feel-able power.
Others, tho, don't like the idea. The nice part is, if you take it out carefully, you can always put it back.

It'* a lil louder sounding without it, and a smooth pipe will negate the use of the screen.

When I removed it form my 1996 oldsmobile with a n/a Series 2 I had no problem. I didn't even put it back in when I sold the car.
For my 1990 park avenue when I removed it I had a ROUGH idle and I felt no performance gain so I put it back in.
