Yes, it'* worth it.
This has been hashed and rehashed over and over.
You need to click on search at the top and search for posts on MAF screen removal and read through them.
Also, click on the techinfo link at the top and find the info on MAF screen removal.
Doing those two things will answer all your questions.

If you got an aftermarket intake, DO IT!

OK.. I've done it to mine and Tamara'* car. And yes some people had bad results from it cause of too much turbulance within the system... I"d agree with Allmachtige that if you're going to invest or have an aftermarket intake to go for it as it basically eliminates the air turbulance cause from the airbox and accordian tube intake that goes into the TB. Thus giving a much better readin of the MAF sensor.. If you're going to stick with the original OEM part intake for now.. I"d also agree with con10der as Tamara'* is a NA series II and mine is the L67 series II and the internal resonator in the airbox MUST be gutted as if you look from behind ( Where the accordian tubes attatch to ) you'll see a gap between the the internal resonator and the airbox.. this void helps eliminate sounds coming back out from the intake.. but causes major turbulance... if in doubt.. look in Tech info or like mentioned.. do a search on it.

Yes do it, I gutted my airbox on Sunday, you can tell a difference. Better throttle response, the gas pedal and RPM'* are jumpy. I reccomend doing it.

YES, it is worth it. Of course have the intake and exhaust done, but this was my first mod to the car.
I read at http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/fre...eemod_home.htm removing the MAF screen on a Series II is good for 10-15% more airflow.
I would have to say, though that I would probably think twice if keeping the airbox as the stock in-box air filters fit good, but they DO allow contaminents around them which makes the oil dirty quicker and could cause problem after a while of building up.
With the custom cold air intakes like ADTR'* and the one I have, as long as you make sure the tb adapter hose, the air sensor connection, and the cone filter all have air-tight connections.

Wouldn't crap get thru even without gutting the airbox, if you say. I don't see how tho, the air filter is snug and with gutting the airbox your just taking out a piece of plastic. Anyway if it did wouldn't the TB be dirty as heck, cause when I did my MAF Screen it was clean.

I pulled my screen and did notice a LITTLE better throttle response. I noticed alot more when i chopped open my air box. i definatly recommend doing that.
