Default Warning Light that I can't find in book

Hello. I am new here and in need of serious help. I am in Germany..Army
wife and I know nothing about cars. My husband is away of course..The
problem is that on the way home a warning light came on and when I looked
in the car book I do not see the symbol. Nor do I know what the symbol is
to describe it. It is on the right hand side of the gage where it shows if
your car is too hot or normal temperature. Does anyone know what it means?
I have never seen it before. Thanks so much!!

Give us a clue. Make of car, model, year. Color of light. Shape. Try to
describe it.

2000 Chevrolet Malibu. I think that the warning light has something to do
with the coolent. I looked again and by the mystery light it says CHECK.
It is an orange color light. It kind of looks like a water faucet or
something..I am not sure what the picture is...sorry. I looked at the
coolent level and it was low so I added more. When I turned the car back
on, the light was still lit up. Does the car need to be running a little
while before the light will go off? I am so aggravated. Thanks.

Looks like its the check engine light.
There is something wrong with either the engine emission controls or the
transmission. The computer has detected this and switched the light on.

If the condition corrects itself (which sometimes happens) the light will
switch off, but in most cases you will have to take it to a GM dealer or
independent garage and have them scan the computer and find out what the
problem is. A scan tool is needed to reset the light after the problem is
fixed. You cannot rest the light by disconnecting the battery.

I'm betting it's the low coolant light which makes me think it's
either a water pump or the manifold head gasket, both of which I've
replaced. Of course it just could need some water but I'd put a mark
on the coolant recovery tank when its cold and check it again when
it's cold. continued drop in fluid means you go to the shop pretty
quickly.

The coolant light is red, I think it is the check engine light if it is
orange, if you take the car to an autozone they will read the codes for
free.

Sounds to me like a low coolant light, I have a '98 malibu, I've seen that
light.
Even if you added coolant, you might not have added enough, so try driving
it for a few days, recheck the coolant level. Mine was so low it took almost
a gallon of coolant!

Best of luck in Germany--

Terry

It was the emissions control light. It went off by itself. Was told it
could have been caused from the fuel, or the gas cap not being on good, or
some electrical thing getting wet. Thank you all for your help.
