Changing Tire Sizes (Two at a Time)
There is an approximate .28 inch difference in width, and an approximate
..55 inch in height between a 225-70-R15 tire and a 215-70-R15 tire, the
215-70-R15s, of course, having the smaller dimensions.
I am currently running 225-70-R15s on my '69 vette. The tires on the
front are virtually new, with only a few hundred miles on them. And I
want to get more mileage out of them.
If I put two new 215-70-R15 tires on the front, and move the relative
two new 225-70-R15s to the rear, and keep a 225-70-R15 as a spare, will
this cause any problems? For example, if I need to use the spare on the
front, would the slight difference in height (approx. .55 inches) cause
any problems?
Thanks,
Charles

Re: Changing Tire Sizes (Two at a Time)
having Different tires for front and back should not cause problems.
BUT, if forced to mis-match the front with the spare you might run
into some problems.
As for specific extra wear on the car, I dont have numbers to quote.
It would no doubt make the car pull to a side seeing how a larger
diamater tire will travel further per rotation than a small one.
This should only be a slight pull, adding more tension(tiny amount) to
the steering and suspension. But they were designed to take alot of
force.
I wouldn't be too concerned, I would think with a car like that, you
would replace with the 'correct' size as soon as you could.
My biggest worry would be the change in ride. You would need to go
slower and be more careful b/c you car will handle oddly with mixed
tire sizes.

Re: Changing Tire Sizes (Two at a Time)
Mismatching the front won't matter since you are just using it as a spare.
If you want to drive the next 5000 miles, that is another matter. Handling
will be off, it will pull some to one side, and braking will probably pull
some. However, it is livable since this is just as a spare for a short
trip.
Mismatching the rear is a problem. The positraction will be in constant
slip and will burn itself up. Be sure to use the same size on both sides of
the rear at all times, except of course a very short emergency trip, like
from the side of the highway to the nearest tire repair.

However, the car will NOT handle oddly if I run two smaller same-sized tires on the front which are up
to two inches, or so, smaller than the two same-sized tires on the rear, correct?
Thanks,
Charles

For over 40 years of driving, save on the family sedan,
I've always changed tires two at a time. Front axle or
rear, seldom both at the same time.
For the 'vette, my front axle emphasis is on cornering,
tracking quality (on our gruvy Calif freeways), and
noise. For the rear on the 'vette I go for straight
line traction first and 'predictable unstick' as the
second quality, noise the third. The good news
is that I'm getting as deaf as a post so can look for
some other quality than noise. My kidney's are
still stuck into my body well enough that ride isn't
very high on my list of priorities.
Set your own preferences and try the two-at-a-time
game. Advantage is that you've only got to resell
two tires when you make a mistake.
Oh yeah, I 'revolve' my 'vette tires, never 'rotate'
them. Once every 2000 miles, I pull each wheel and
turn it a couple of bolt holes to 'disturb' the angular
relationship between the brake disks and the tire
irregularities. I've found that tires require less
re-balancing and I refinish brake disks less
frequently than before I started this game.

Interesting, I've done just the opposite, mark the lug and always put the
rim back on the same spot. Now you got me thinking, it hurts some but I'll
get over it.

I had always done the same--mark the lug
and keep things together--that dates from
when we used to spin balance wheels on the
car with Stewart-Warner mag pickups and
strobe lights.
Actually, I didn't dream this up myself. It
occurred to me after the service advisor at
our Buick dealer said that rotating tires resulted
in extended brake life--I asked why and she
explained that tread density and belt
characteristics leave their mark on brake
disks and, brake disk irregularities wear pads,
tires, suspension parts and all that other jazz.
(I hate it when Kathy Redmond tells me how
cars work!)
Since I don't rotate tires on the fun cars, the
only thing left to do was to revolve them.
