Default 2001 Alero Car won't shut off

Hello again. My 2001 Alero (2.4l 4cyl) will not shut off if I run the a/c. I turn the key to the off position, and other than not being able to shift the vehicle, because the lockout, the car runs as if I never turned the key. In order to cut the car off, I have to turn off the A/C and drive it around the block. Anyone have any ideas?

you sure its not just the ign cyl, sometimes working and sometimes not, try shutting it off a couple times. if so what does it do if you shut the a/c off with the key off?

I doubt that it'* the key cylinder, because if I haven't had the A/C on, it shuts off immediately 100% of the time. To get it to cut off, I need to (in this order)

1) Cut off the A/C
2) Drive the car around the block
3) Park and turn the car off

I would think it'* the ignition switch, but the A/C component of this problem is throwing me off a bit.

If I shut the a/c off with the key off, the car keeps running. No matter how many times I turn the key. (Sorry, no edit button)

it could be over heating the switch, it may need the time off to cool. i dont think the a/c is back-feeding the switch sometimes and sometimes not that doesnt seem very likely.

Hey Justin, as a test procedure, do you think disconnecting the 2 wire connector from the compressor might show that the diode is bad? I mean if he disconnected it, turned the a/c on and tried to shut the car off.

thats a possibility, have to look at the diagrams to see if it would back feed the key on circuit
