Default 95 Cutlass 3.1 Tranny not going to OD

My tranny makes a noise, sounds like power steering when they whine, but my steering is fine. I think the noise is my tranny. Sometimes it shifts fine. Other times it shifts into OD but won't down shift by itself. Today it acts like its running on 5 cylinders. I can be in drive & push the accelerator all the way to the floor & it boggs down.

It'* funny the way the computers are programmed these days. If the PCM detects some misfires, it may disable the torque converter lockup. How long since the last tune up?

The whine could very well be your power steering pump. They do sound like superchargers.

Then I suggest a full tune up then.

I'll do that today. We'll see if it helps.

I would recommend beside the spark plugs a new set of wires as well.
I would also replace the fuel filter too.
Check the operation of the throttle butterfly and make sure it is able to fully open, has smooth operation and not sticking or even slightly binding. Clean if needed!

I think a "full tuneup" constitutes plugs and wires. LOL

Ok, I replaced the Plugs, plug wires & fuel filter. It runs great now but the OD still the same. Also the abs & brake light on the dash are on & the air bag light comes on at times too. The whining is coming from the tranny area. You can hear the whine change pitch when it shifts!

You could be looking at a trans issue, but lets eliminate the power steering pump for sure.

I would prefer you do this when the car is cold. Disconnect and tie off the serpentine belt so its not rubbing the crank pulley. Get in, start it and just drive it for a quick run. Basically up the street and back. If the noise is completely gone, then its the power steering pump.

Ok, I took the belt off & drove around the block. Noise is still there! Also the OD won't work at all today. The park brake light & ABS lights on the dash are both on. I reset the ECU, Still there!
