I shopped it today to have the ABS problem looked at and so after about and hour of me sitting there they came out and told me left front motor in the HCU (hydraulic Control Unit) had shorted out and it would be better to try to find a used one they said because a new one would run right around $700.00 not including labor which in another $170.00. The HCU bolts to the side of the Master Cylinder. So my question is if I bought a used one how hard would it be for a novice shade tree mechanic like myself to do or is it better for a shop to install the part. Any and all advice would be very helpful in the topic. Thanks.

Not recommended for the shade tree. You would need access to a scanner that can turn on the ABS bleed feature. Only high end $2000 SnapOn and GM Tech 2 scanners can do this.

Try to find a junkyard that carries it and buy it. Take it to the shop and have them swap it out. They probably would only warranty the labor and not the part.

I can get a used HCU for right around $100 with a 6 month warranty. Is that a good deal or should I keep looking for a better deal.

I don't know what a fair price would be. Compared to brand new, that seems a bit steep. Question is, will that 6 month warranty cover the cost of having it installed, and then replaced the same day because the first one didn't work?

Well that is me buying it and then taking it to a shop to have it installed. I forgot to mention this but in that warranty they also test them before they sale them to insure they work.

I almost forgot to ask but can I just remove the computer on the side of HCU and avoid the need to disconnect the brake lines from the unit. The reason why I am asking this because I noticed the the computer part on the HCU is offset and the brake lines go into the other part of the HCU. If I can just remove the computer part that would be freaking awesome. That would save me a lot of time and money.

I thought they diagnosed the hydraulic unit was bad? Wouldn't that mean you would need to remove the other part and not the computer?

Your right. I did some more reading into it and found that I couldn't do that because it is an all in one unit so I will half to save up my money to get this problem fixed. Also will it do any damage to my brakes by driving the car with manual brakes.

The system is designed to work fine should the ABS unit fail. Depending on the vehicle, you would normally lose ABS and Traction Control.

I have two ABS units in the car. The HCU and an ABS/ETC controller. The said the controller itself is fine but the HCU it out. Will it hurt the other unit if it takes me a little bit to get the money together to have the work done.
