Question Alero Problem!

A friend of mine has a 2001? Alero with the 4 cyl motor. Her ex is trying to replace the water pump. He says thee motor is a quad 4. And the water pump is ran off the timing chain. If this is true... Whats the procedure to replace the water pump?

This is what I got from my service manual. Hope this helps, if not I'll see what else I can get.

Important
The timing chain tensioner must be removed to unload chain tension before the water pump is removed. If the tension is not unloaded, the water pump will become cocked in the timing chain housing and the water pump will be difficult to remove.

Rotate the timing chain sprockets to line up the holes. Looks like a special tool is needed for this .
Remove the bolts holding the tensioner in place.

Remove the water pump cover to the cylinder block bolts.
Remove the water pump assembly to the timing chain housing nuts.
Remove the water pump cover assembly.
Remove the water pump.
Remove the water pump cover to the water pump assembly bolts.
Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.
Inspect the water pump for cracking.

The best procedure is to bring it to someone that has done this many times. The pump is driven off the chain, the cams must be marked and are a pain to reset properly, the chain is probably something to be replaced while it'* out and the guides too IIRC. BTW there'* no room in the engine bay to work on it.

Been there, helped on one before. And that was with a buddy that was ASE and Pontiac trained for them. Nasty critters, one of those jobs that it'* better to pay for someone to do it.

Ya, it looks like a job that would not be easy or fun.

Oh..in that case.

Water Pump Replacement (2.4L)
>Removal Procedure
  1. Drain the coolant. Recover the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

Remove the coolant intake pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Inlet Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
Lower the vehicle.
Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
Remove the timing chain and tensioner. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.

Remove the water pump cover-to-cylinder block bolts.
Remove water pump pipe to cylinder block bolt.

Remove the 3 water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
Remove the water pump and cover assembly.
Remove the water pump cover-to-coolant pump assembly bolts.
  3. Clean all sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
  1. Important: Before you install the coolant pump, read the entire procedure. Follow the tightening sequences in order to avoid part damage and to provide proper sealing.

Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
Install the pump cover bolts. Hand tighten the bolts.
Install water pump cover assembly.

Install the cover-to-block bolts. Hand tighten the bolts.
Install the coolant pump-to-timing chain housing nuts. Hand tighten the nuts.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Torque in sequence as follows:
6.1. Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.

    Tighten
Tighten water pump to timing chain housing nuts to 26 N·m (19 lb ft).
6.2. Tighten the pump cover-to-pump assembly bolts.
    Tighten
Tighten the water pump cove to water pump bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).
6.3. Tighten the coolant pump cover-to-engine block bolts. Tighten the bottom bolt first.
    Tighten
Tighten water pump to engine block bolts to 26 N·m (19 lb ft).

Install heater hose to pipe on water pump.
Install the exhaust manifold and install new gaskets. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
Install oil level indicator tube and indicator. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.4L.
Connect the brake vacuum pipe to the cam housing.
Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Install catalytic converter to to manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
Install the coolant inlet pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Inlet Pipe Replacement .
Install the timing chain and tensioner. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Sprocket, and Tensioner Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.
Lower the vehicle.
Connect the oxygen sensor connector.
Fill cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
