Default 1988 oldsmobile cutlass ciera international 3.8 engine swap?

How hard would it be to do this (someone told me i would ahve to go through the bottom of the car and take the tanny out with it) how much would it cost to have like a junkyard take one of their good 3.8'* and and swap it with mine?

Well how hard is it to swap the 2 engines do i have to go through the bottom? I dont see anything that would get in the way and prevent it from comming out the top....the international series has more room to work with (i can change the back 3 spark plugs without movieing the engine) and if I can go through the top what would i all have to do? Like remove top motor mount bottom motor mounts dissconnect the transmission from the engine take gas lines off throttle cables sensers (would put tap around the connector plug color coded so if i dont know what connector goes where i will color code it on the old engine and the plugs) thats about all besides like crusie control lines and stuff like that.....engines at the junk yard are like $200 and trannys are like $100-150

Cool think if i wrap chains around the engine and then slide heavy duty piping inbetween the chains on the top of the engine and get 4 strong guys we will beable to lift it out of the car?

Bicyle would be cheaper
Be leary of JY engines, specially as old as these 87'* are today. I'd want to see the engine in the car and determine why the car was parked. If you beat on a old engine it will never last, never, I dont care if its a old Mac diesel it will not last.

That said :

The Cierra is narrower than we H body guys are used to. You either need to buy a manual and see if it gives a out the top procedure or not. My question would be, is there enough room on the right hand inner fender to come free of tranny? Should be. I believe you leave the torque converter with the tranny. I have never done this job.

I did once pull a 1.7 aluminum head 4 cylinder with 3 guys. Two on beam and me in center lifting and controling. It was nuts ! ! ! ! ! The procedure was right in the manual, its where I got the silly idea. Darn shade tree limeys. Oh, the good old days.

The problem is not being able to hold or handle the weight, its when you realize how high you have to lift it to get out of the engine bay. We were 3 young tuff, hardened farm boys that were no strangers to lifting weight. It was very hairy getting over the core support. They gave me alot of tuff luv after they got to set the engine down. I should have been one of the ones on the beam. I was the largest but I was worried about the engine bay.

I say set up a tripod (correctly) and borrow a comealong. Thats how I put the engine back in. This is all easier living in the country. Pole wood is easy and cheap to come by. or two trees close enought to tie (correctly) a beam across.

rod went through the cylinder wall lol rebuilting it is out of the question i hope a 2.8l v-6 would fit in there cause i have a exelent 2.8l v-6 just sitting around 1987 pontiac 6000-le 2.8l v-6 swap to a 1988 cutlass ciera international series 3.8?
