99 88 ignition switch replacment
Hi all.
Here'* the deal.
my son owns a 1999 olds 88 (nice car). He replaced his ignition switch... almost. He is replacing the switch because the car died on him while driving down the freeway. It has also been giving him trouble for a little while by not starting. Somehow he thought it might be the ignition switch. But that is neither here nor there... now we need to get the thing back together.
There are two wires from the switch that need to be inserted into the wiring harness plug under the dash. He/we can not get the wiring harness plug to de-mate, or even out far enough from under the dash where we can see it. I see where the wires go in but I can't see how to get the plug apart. There is not much room under there.
Is there a book with a picture, internet site or somewhere we can get an exploded view?
Has anyone done this job before?
Fred

The switch is in . Car still won't start. All interior lights and accessories work but there are no engine/ security/ or any other lights on the dash.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes that'* right. We replaced the ignition lock cylinder. when it is turned to the "run" position all interior lights, radio and stuff works but there are no engine warning lights. Then when you turn it to "start" everything dies. In all the other cars i have owned before when you turn the key to "run" before you engage the starter, all engine monitoring lights com on.

The actual switch is down on the column, connected by a rack and rod assy. I would start by checking there and checking fuses, theres a fuse box on the left, a small one on the right, and a underhood fuse panel. Good luck.

Yes we've looked at all those fuses and beakers. the battery is good. the switch... i haven't looked at. but if the VATS is preventing a start should i still see the engine lights come on with the switch in the on position?
