As I stated in my earlier post, if you are getting spark the crank shaft position sensor is not the problem.

Okay, so what are your thoughts on the cam sensor?

You'll see one or several of the following symptoms when the Cam Sensor fails:
  1. Diagnostic Trouble Code: P0341: Cam Sensor Circuit Performance.
  2. Poor gas mileage.
  3. Idle rough at start up and Engine may stumble and stall.
The one thing you need to keep in mind is that a Cam Sensor failure will not keep your car from starting.

there are numerous ways a hall effect sensor and the resistance in the wires can cause your timing to be off enough to not start and still have spark. the signal initiates the timing in the pcm and if the signal is sent at the wrong time the spark will still be generated but at the wrong time

Okay, so even with the mixed advice on this, I went ahead and replaced the crank sensor. For those of you who said that'* no t the problem, go ahead and say "I told you so." because the problem is unchanged. It cranks and sounds like it'* close to starting, then not, then again. Starting fluid won't make it start, and there is spark.

I'm getting to the point of having it towed to a shop as I don't have access to a scan tool. Maybe it would be worth the investment to buy one...

I don't think you tested the ignition control module yet.

You're right, but being that the testing procedure says that if there is a spark, it'* not the module or the crank sensor. I already replaced the crank sensor anyway only to find out that was not the problem. So you think it'* worth the effort to test the module? I was thinking I should test for spark from each coil as I have only tested one so far.

tbh i always test everything i can before i replace anything, you can test the signal from the cps to see if its good and getting to the pcm. there is actually two on that car. i would test outputs, power, and ground to the icm/ and cps

Thanks, I'll do some more testing on it.

FYI - the problem turned out to be a broken camshaft. I guess that'* pretty common for these 3.1'*. Looks like I'll need to find a good used 3.1 (if there is such a thing).

Thanks for all of the help you guys have provided.
