Description
Engine Oil Pressure Sensor Low Volt
The engine oil pressure sensor is a solid state transducer. The engine oil pressure sensor sends oil pressure information to the PCM. The PCM then transmits the oil pressure information to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) via the serial data circuit. The engine oil pressure is displayed on the scan tool in volts. A low voltage reading indicates low oil pressure. As the oil pressure increases, the voltage level also increases. The normal range of the engine oil level sensor signal voltage is 0.5 volts at 0 kPA (0 psi) to 4.5 volts at 883 kPa (128 psi)
Symptoms
Check for the following conditions:

Symptoms
- The PCM will not illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
- The PCM will store the conditions, which were present when the DTC set as Failure Records Data only. This information will not be stored as Freeze Frame data.
- The engine oil pressure sensor voltage is equal to or less than 0.4 volts.
- The voltage conditions are present for at least 9 seconds.
Check for the following conditions:
- A faulty connection at the PCM – inspect the harness connectors for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, and faulty terminal to wire connections.
- Inspect the wiring harness for damage.
- If the harness appears to be okay, turn ON the ignition, leaving the engine OFF. Measure the voltage between the 5 volt reference circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor and the ground circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor. Is the voltage less than 5 volts?
- YES – Test the 5 volt reference circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor for a short to ground, high resistance or an open. If you found and corrected the problem clear the DTC.
- If you did not find a problem inspect for faulty connections at the harness connector of the PCM. If you found and corrected the problem clear the DTC. If you did not find a problem, replace the oil pressure sensor.
