I guess if u let your insurance expire (even if the car isnt being driven, and just being worked on) when u go to get insurance again, u have to go threw a high risk insurance company and pay high risk prices for 6 months! WTF. So now i have to sign the car over to my girl friends mom for the six months then we can switch it back into my girlfriends name again. RIDICULOUS!

If you kept plates on it regardless of the situation, In New York you pay $8 a day on top of becoming high risk, for every day it'* plated and uninsured. And they are brutal about it. When the NYS DMV has a money lien against you, you become a non person. You license and registrations are immediately revoked and you can't do anything within the State Gov System until you clear it up with them. Moved to the Lounge, this isn't a GM car specific topic.

NYS actually charges you $8 a day first 30 days, $10 a day for 31-60 and $12 a day for 61-90. On your 91 day you license is suspended. I am an insurance agent and I see this ALL the time.

The reason you are in a HIGH RISK is because of the insurance lapse. It is reported by the DMV so when your MVR is run by insurance companies they see that you were in a lapse and believe you may be a careless driver since you had your insurance lapse. Fortunately SOME insurance companies dont care about lapse of insurance and some do. It is possible that you rate may increase in 6 months because it does not show that you have had continous insurance coverage. Believe me....I have seen it happen!!

My opinion. Bite the bullet. Pay a higher premium. It will show that you are making on time payments, show that you have continous coverage and when your insurace company renews your policy in 6 months this should and will show positives for you and possibly reduce your premium.

Check your state. I'm not licensed specifically for MI, but you could possibly take a DDC <defensive driving course> that could reduce your policy by 5-10%. If you are going to carry full coverage have higher deductables and if carry lower limits to help offset the cost may help you too. Best of luck!!

Do you do PA Insurance? I need to find a break for 3 full collision vehicles and a boat. It'* killing me. Progressive gives a wimpy multi car discount. I dont get it. I can't drive all my toys at once.

I do not write for PA. PA is a tough state with your tort options and all. I know GEICO has some good rates in PA. Give them a call. I have friends that have there home, cars, jet-ski'* and atv with them and they get some heafty discounts.

In this day of age....who doesnt want to save money....and drive all their toys at once!

Venom...I've got Progressive on the Bonnie, the truck and the bike. I get a decent multi-vehicle discount here and have been happy with them. I had Safeco and had my house and vehicles insured with them and they screwed me on a regular basis when it came to paying premiums. I still carry my earthquake and home owners through them,l but if I could get a better discount through Progressive by putting all my eggs in one basket I would. But, I would loose my earthquake rider and I don't want to do that!

Try USAA John. Full coverage on 2 vehicles, my boat, and renters insurance at 30K gets me at $85 a month.

On another note, some insurance companies will let you keep the insurance policy active even if you don't own a vehicle. At a reduced cost of course.
