UPDATE
I noticed quite a few people asking about a manual transmission. Here is your answer from GM:
The base G8 model receives a 3.6L DOHC V-6 with variable valve timing, rated at 261 horsepower (194 kW). It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
The G8 GT is powered by a uniquely configured 6.0L small-block V-8, rated at 362 horsepower (270 kW) and 391 lb.-ft. of torque (530 Nm). A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode is standard and features the fuel-saving Active Fuel Management system, which enhances fuel economy by alternating between eight- and four-cylinder power. An optional six-speed manual transmission will be available soon after launch.

Or you could just go to our sister board... www.G8Board.com and get all the info you want on the car.
Sorry, we've been on the G8 watch since the GMX282 platform has evolved, Holden penned it'* architecture, and bases the current Commodore off of it. The minute I saw that new Commodore, I knew I wanted whatever it came as, when starts production here.

Why did GM decide not to go with the 3800? I gotta problem with that one there.

Its a great engine, but its had its run, time for something more powerful and they needed to make a statement. The 3800 made a statement in 1992. Its going on 2008 now.

Im going to miss the 3800, it has a lineage that you cant say for any other engine on the market. And why not keep it? The parts for it are everywhere, its easy to service, it has had years of refinement (sometimes not for the better), ect.
Id like to see a HUD on the G8. If several other of GM'* OLDER models had it, then their newer, fancier flagships should have them as well. If im going to have a fully loaded G8, I want as many bells and whistles as I can get.

I agree with Boreas, It may be getting some age on it but the 3800 is still a great motor.
And another thing, not even a 5 speed with the V6? Something I wouldn't mind...
