You're talking to a computer builder and an MCSE!
I can tell you from experience that the only slow down or "mini-interrupts", as I call them, that I've noticed are from older boards (i.e. 1998 or older). Very few are in the 98-00 range, and, as of yet, none 01 or newer. My computer here requires dual RAM, and it was bought last year, on a P4 board. But there are plenty of labels and such that warn you of that.
That being said, if your board is older than '98, I'd stick to dual RAM.
