Bump...

Just joined our team for 20 some challenges. I know we can get more than 4 people from this board. It doesn't take more than 5 minutes of your time, and you can forget about it afterward. All it takes is a couple of minutes, and if (God forbid) you ever do get hit by cancer at some point in your life, at least you'll be able to say you did something about it, as insignificant as it may seem. Every little bit counts.

So far, we have 33 days and 13 hours of runtime between all of the computers all of us have running this thing, which comes out to an average of 4 days and 19 hours of processing time per calendar day.

It basically sends your computer projects to process. Your computer'* CPU does calculations on an amazingly large scale, things our minds couldn't even comprehend. Many large institutions have access to supercomputers, which consist of thousands of processors that will calculate what needs to be calculated.

Well, scientists and doctors need data that they need processed/calculated, and they don't all have access to supercomputers due to cost. Companies like IBM will occasionally donate a supercomputer for such use. This program allows everyone to combine their computers using this program in order to create a nationwide supercomputer. Your computer pulls a project that needs to be worked on, and while you're away from your computer, it starts chugging along and processing that data. When the results of the calculations are in, it sends the project back for analysis. Scientists need hundreds of thousands, if not millions of results to come in so that they can combine everything and gain a better understanding of how diseases, cancers, and other such things work in order to develop more effective treatment systems, and possibly cures.

So in essence, you being a part of this program allows you to contribute some processing power in order to allow the doctors' and scientists' research to progress. You are indirectly helping make a different in medical research.

Well I guess I'll join and run the program whenever I use my computer. It'll prolly be running overnight here before long to encrypt the whole hard drive anyways.

Tad bit overkill? lol. Here are my desktop'* specs:

4GB DDR2-800

1 150GB 10k WD Velociraptor

3 147GB SCSI 10k RAID 5 on LSI MegaRAID 320-2
650W Coolmax PSU

With those specifications, my APC UPS reports I'm pulling ~360W under full load while gaming from the wall at 120V. Factor in 80% PSU efficiency and my PSU'* load is closer to 290W. Had I known this at the time, I would probably picked a 450W or 550W PSU. I'm considering getting rid of the SCSI RAID 5, since the drives and the RAID card alone draw 80W-100W.

In either case, thanks for hopping aboard. You should hook up a power meter one day and see how much that system actually draws under full load.

I did hook the Kill-A-Watt meter to it one day but don't remember how many watts it was using. Did calculate the cost per month and it was about $50/month to run 8hrs/day

Wow, that is quite a lot. I'd be quite curious to know how much power you're drawing from the wall.
