World Community Grid
Alright, I need a minute of your time. This won't take long, and I'm not here to sell something.
I've been part of a system for a while now. Many of you I'm sure have heard of it before; grid computing. Grid computing allows many computers to be used together to process a common cause or purpose. There are many programs that allow you to donate your unused computer time to further the research of specific areas, whether its weather patterns or searching for aliens.
The program I'm a part of is called the World Community Grid, focusing on cancer, aids, deseases, and other humanitarian efforts. Unfortunately, some of this research requires massive computing power. This is where we come in.
This site allows you to register and download an application that can run on your computer. This application will then download projects (fairly small), and process them on your computer when you're not using it. It leaves a very small footprint on your computer so you won't even notice that is there. You can change the settings to suit your specific computer. On my laptop, I have it set to start working only 3 minutes after I've been idle or away from the computer, and only while its plugged in.
To give you an idea of how long I've been on this project, I have 1 year, 70 days, and 11 hours clocked in so far of CPU processing time. I recently picked it back up in light of my father in law'* lung cancer and brain tumor, and I'm sure many of you have gone through or have had family members go through other types of cancers that have either taken a toll on their lives or taken their lives. I know if I ever have cancer in the future, I'll want to know that I did everything I could to try to make a difference before. Some people only start fighting for a cause when it hits home. Here'* a chance to fight for a cause that costs you nothing, before it ever hits home.
I've run this by GXP Venom, and he allowed me to post this. I've created a team so we can all gather our statistics together. Some teams are handed special projects to work on or challenges, which is a neat little twist. However, he said that we can't use the gmforum name for copyright reasons, so I created a team titled "The Xtreme Revolution," because big changes can happen with an extreme revolution.
Once you register, you can join my team, download and install the app, and forget about it. Whenver you walk away from your computer for a set amount of time (you can specify it), it will start doing work helping find cures for diseases, and helping doctors learn more about cancers, AIDS, and etc.
Who'* with me here?

sounds like when i was a part of the folding@home and SETI@home projects...
can you set processor useage? because with my laptop, going 100% for more than a couple hours gets the surrounding area of the case alarmingly hot....
if the cores can be throttled to 50% each though, i can do that.

Uh Hum!.... As you Administrator, I wholeheartedly endorse this cause. Don't make me cause you to wear a pink signature the rest of your natural Forum life.

Nice! I like it! Lets get more people joined in on this. Right now I have my laptop, two desktops, and my netbook. My wife is also part of the team on her own laptop.
