I've done the linux thing. I didn't have the patience for it. To do anything with new software, it'* such a pain to install and make work. I used Mandrake 10.0. I did like it, but it was a pain whenever something needed changing.
I refused to go back to Windows, so we got a mac.

I've tried running OpenSuse 9.3 on my laptop and I couldn't get the cardbus drivers to work. It would show up and list as a Texas Instruments PCI 1410 controller but it listed as not configured.... I also didn't get the two beeps when it booted. I've since wiped it and loaded XP but I left half the drive available to dual boot. Any advice for a semi-newbie?

Only advice I have is that if your system has trouble with that particular cardbus chipset chances are good that others have had it. In addition to google, try google groups.
I've spent countless hours just trying to get some things configured in Linux... i.e. my wireless LAN miniPCI card. For some systems there are people who have come up with wrappers for Windows drivers. They seem to work well.
Definitely check out sourceforge.net too for some good projects out there... I have seen driver projects out there.
Or if you are really ambitious you can always write your own drivers
