is it safe to run without this piece? [Malibu 3500]

the dealer called it PCV piping. there is no sensor anywhere along the tubing (or on either end). it connects to just under the coil packs.

Keep it. It is a ventilation tube that goes from the rear valve cover to the air intake tube. It is needed for proper PCV ventilation. I had something similar on both of my 3100s, and 3.1 MPFI.

i should clarify. he doesnt want it off permanently, but itll take a week for a new one to get here and he needs to know if its safe for him to drive the car during that week.

It can also be plugged for the interim, at the valve cover end. If you have to replace that hose, lop it off, and put something like a bolt in the other end of it, until the replacement comes.
