It was in the works at Yucca Mountain, Arizona. In 2002 Congress passed a Law mandating it. It has the right location and soil for it, but a previously known fault line was discovered to run to close to the proposed facility for Arizona residents and officials. Bush ***** footed around the issue while trying to keep all concerned (Por and Con) complacent. Obama has albeit killed it by pulling all funding and On March 3, 2010, the Department of Energy filed a motion with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to withdraw the license application for a high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain with prejudice. The President’* fiscal year 2011 budget request eliminates funding for the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management all together and put it back into the hands of the Office of Nuclear Energy. A new "Blue Ribbon"
Commission on America’* Nuclear Future, led by Congressman Lee Hamilton and General Brent Scowcroft, will "conduct a comprehensive review of policies for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, and will provide recommendations for developing a safe, long-term solution to managing the Nation’* used nuclear fuel and nuclear waste.".
