Default Undercover '05 GXP, Anyone?

I was considering on getting a Bonneville later, but I think it would be sweet to make it my off-duty cop car. Anyone with me still?

Would have all the antennas, the laptop mount, etc..

Would it be worth it? Also, you can't */c that Northstar engine can you... Actually, can you do anything to it?

The GXP uses a Northstar engine. It has variable cam timing, variable ignition timing, several knock sensors, , and a newer generation of ECM/TCM/StabilTrak integration with the PCM. Because of all this complexity (and there is more than I even know and listed), and how it works together to operate the engine management, the PCM is Locked. Non-flashable. ROM memory set at the factory. Several things can be done. For alot more money than someone would normally spend on modding.

Several manufacters make a aftermarket MAF for the LD8 with it'* own translator. Average cost $350. Gains of up to 6% are advertised. Dont count on it.

You can alter the airflow and exhaust, but the GXP already has in place tuned high performance versions of each. More liable to screw something up than to improve.

Change the PCM. $1800 for a Marelli such as Custom Hot Rods and sandcarts using the Northstar go with. You can expect to pay far more for the installation and tuning of this PCM than it'* cost. It doesnt come flashed to install and go.

Nitrous. Nitrous works well, but easy to overdo. You have to change to copper spark plugs, nitrous eats platinum. And because of the PCM limitations, any more than a 75HP shot makes the engine stumble in mid-range. Also it can only be used in WOT applications starting in mid range torque for a normally tuned engine. It'* very easy to blow the plenum right off the engine and create a fire you may not live to regret. Nitrous is an extreme oxidizer and a nightmare when mixed with gas and not used exactly as it'* intended for.

Why the "off duty" Police car. Officers that exhibit that kind of behavior get removed from duties. Being an officer is a great responsibility and huge liability to a Municipality. When you go off duty, you are just another citizen and they dont want you taking your job with you.

Not to argue GXP, but when you're off-duty, you're still a cop, just in civilian clothes, in some departments you're even allowed to carry your gun off-duty. In actuality off-duty cop cars can be used in high-speed pursuits and can also pull people over. Off-duty chief of police pulled my brother over.

Not in Oklahoma... Ive seen several lose their badge and gun for "off duty vigilante justice". Ive taken it to the chief of police and the sgt, who is the father of a wrestling teammate back in High School, and neither take kindly to it BECAUSE... they dont have have the uniform to show who they are, the lights to signal they are in an emergency, the siren, a radio to communicate with, or anything else so they would probably end up causing more chaos trying to get the person than they would help becuase they would be fighting with traffic with no way to show who they were.

Not to mention they get fired for Entrapment...i know... ive done it... its illegal

Trust i KNOW what they can do and cant do, according to Oklahoma Law... I have 3 friends as Sheriffs Deputys, 2 as Local Police, know several, and my ex'* aunt was a Texas State Trooper, one of the few female ones actually, has a picture shaking hands with The Chuck Norris

Yep, and that'* Oklahoma, there are different laws in different cities and different states. I thank you for your concern though, but I know what I'm doing, just don't know what car to do it to.

If a department allows or wants you to carry an off-duty weapon - they have a policy that dictates the type, caliber and how often you need to qualify with it along with your duty weapon.

If they require you to have an off-duty car, there will policies and procedures that outline what you can and cannot have on it if it'* a personal vehicle. If its a department provided one, you will get what it'* got.

I think you are putting the cart before the horse. Get hired, know what the policy and procedures are, what is expected of you as a rookie officer, and then go from there.

BTW - Good luck on insuring a private vehicle that is outfitted as a on off duty/response police car. If you can find a carrier to insure it, you probably won't be able to afford the premium on PD pay.

I guess I forgot about insurance, I saw this one police chase on youtube where this off-duty cop was using his old beater truck to chase a speeder, kinda funny. I know about the whole policy thing as well, trust me I don't jump into things unless I've thought through it for a long time..

Q: Can an off duty officer in an unmarked vehicle pull you over and issue a ticket?

A: "Yes they can," Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said.
"It actually doesn't happen often, but sometimes you see violations that are pretty egregious, that could be potentially dangerous, and you have to act."
But officers in some jurisdictions are told that unless they see a life-threatening situation while off duty, they shouldn't get involved.
"Authorization to take enforcement action when off duty comes from individual department policy," Bellevue police spokesman Greg Grannis said. "If the officer'* department authorizes them to issue citations for traffic infractions observed off-duty, they may do so."
In his nearly eight years a Bellevue officer, Grannis has only stopped two people while off duty. The first person was a drunken driver; the other was a woman who appeared to be drunk heading toward the freeway. Turns out she was weaving across traffic lanes because she was changing shoes while driving.
"Generally we discourage it," Grannis said of off-duty stops. "If someone is truly off-duty, they might not be wearing body armor. If the contact goes south, they might not have all the equipment they need for protection.
"(The crime witnessed) needs to be something that'* potentially life-threatening, and it has to be worth the risk to them to stop the crime."

That'* only in Seattle, but it seemed to be a pretty good generalization.

Not good to generalize though. Especially on the east coast where we take things a little more civilized. (Not saying that'* a good thing.) And lawsuits and rulings have City Governments gunshy. I can safely say for Municipal Police on both sides of the NY/PA border I live on, when you end your shift, your authority is ended except for a life threatening incident. When you get the education and position, I think the newness of your ambitious plans will wear off, and you'll be glad for the down time. It'* a zoo out there these days, and people today seem to have no respect for themselves, let alone others and authority. I dont have to go far on this to reflect on what I'm saying. The constant shootings down in Philly, and the 4 Police Officers this weekend in San Diego that severely misjudged what life meant to the shooter they encountered. The inner cities of this country are sadly turning into war zones. Even here in this rural setting we have people running around half crazed from the crystal meth they get cheap and burn out on.
