How is HP above IBM? Aside from the obviousness of your job being an impact in that decision.

I guess you have not had fun with the higher end workstations

On my desk right now got a dell with Dual 3.6s Irwindales 2MB cache and 4GB DDR2 (supports 16GB) and a 256MB Vid Card...a little overkill for what I do but it works.

The Servers are a much better deal than HP or IBM as far as specs and service contracts go...in most cases they will have a 2 hour or 4 hour warranty with them. Meaning it is fixed within 2 hours or 4 hours of the time they contact dell.

The consumer desktops suck, I'd never buy a dell dimension or low end PC like that. Been building my own for 8 years now. Inspiron Laptops suck too, very flimsy as well as the newer latitude lines except the D series. The Precision Mobile laptops are still built good but will cost you many grand to get one. In that case IBM > Toshiba > HP > Dell

But bill you are right, dell does not try to dominate the higher end, we try to target all sectors evenly with a lot of focus on the consumer markets (the $299 pc lol)

I also have a lot {negative} to say about the dell rebranded lexmark {crap} printers. It is sad when at dell we use strictly HP for all the high production printers

I have always run HP laser and inkjets printers at home

But if you want high end at a decent price you can still get it from us.

Glad to hear that your job is ok Bill. I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 (i know its a cheapie) BUT DAMN its durable, its been dropped like oh maybe 20x or so the part where the hinge is, the plastic cracked but oh well everthing else works like a charm and its fast for everthing i use it for, battery life could be better but oh well i use it plugged in most of the time anyway. Our HP Pavilion Desktop is pretty decent though it is aging, its a 2000, i updated it to XP but its really starting to drag.

You don't do your homework do you? IBM has pulled out of the consumer market due to lack of sales and market share. Interpreted as: "Nobody is buying our crap". They do Enterprise and Servers almost exclusively now.

If you look around, HP is really the only company left that competes in the low, mid, and high-range market, as well as Enterprise and Servers.

And you don't even want to hear the specs on my workstation or laptop. You'd just cry. And I have 24-hour full replacement on both.

When your right your right Bill , HP is the only real company that has most of the lower cost pc market covered. HP markets there PCs at major retail stores like Staples and Wal-Mart. Does Dell.... Nope! IBM.... Not that i know or have ever seen! HP does have the market for PC covered pretty well, at least i think so.

Your observations are correct. We get market analysis all the time at work. You have to base a company'* success in any particular market on their market share. Market share is a reflection of consumer preference. It'* an indication of who'* buying what.

Eh, I've got a Mac. Doesn't crash like Windows, much easier to use than Linux. I don't miss my blue sceens of death at all. Linux worked fine, but it'* a pain to install software unless you have the time to really get in-depth and learn the OS. With a Mac, it'* all intuitive and GUI for the most part.

I'm actually kinda shocked that I'm the first Mac user to post a reply.

I do have an HP Deskjet 5740 though. Nice printer.
