Flight to CA should be pie, 3 hours maybe.
Bring a book or watch the in flight movie if anything good is playing.
If you're flying out of O'Hare get there early, but anywhere else isn't as strict. Have your passport and ticket always handy. Be ready to take off your shoes, coat, and remove everything from your pockets a few times.

and if your boarding pass says "SSSS" anywhere on it, it will be highlighted at a security screening checkpoint and big burly man will tell you to step aside and give you the option to go to a separate room or be questioned and patted down in public. You will also be asked to identify all of your possesions that has passed thru the Xray machine.
This may happen when you make a change to your flightplan. SSSS means Selected for Secondary Security Screening. Happened to me at LaGuardia last March when my collegues and I tried to get onto an earlier flight from NYC to TOR.
Contact your airline or airport authority for any lengthy delays and have fun.

You can't bring into the airport, you'll have to get them there...
I like to usually get there 1hr 30mins to a hr early...
If your bringing a carry on and you have cologne put it in a ziplock bacg or they'll take it away..
Bring something to listen to or read..
I advise to eat in the airport cause they don't give much when your not flying to far...
And I highly recommend putting something on your bags so you can tell that its yours.. you won't belive on how so many bags look like..( I usually put some type of string or I have a huge Volcom sticker on mine so that gets it right off that back )
Otherwise have fun!!! I fly all the time so its a breeze for me and I can't wait to be on the airplane on march 3rd!!

And remember to chew gum, just as they are pressurizing the plane. This will prevent your eardrums from rupturing, and save you from screaming your fool head while the plane is in flight.......The rest of the passengers tend to frown on that

1. Arrive an hour earlier than your friend'* advise you of for your particular airport.
2. Do what everyone at the airport tells you what to do (not including the guy with the drum at the front door looking for money for the Dali Lama).
That'* all you need to know.

I would suggest you go to Wally world or local drugstore and get the "trial sizes" of toliteries, i.e. shaving cream, ect. If you try and take a regular size can it will be disposed of. What airport will you be flying out of for the connecting flight to Calif?
