Default Satellite TV Problem

Hey Guys and Gals. It'* been a while since i've been in here (mom now drives my bonneville) but I have yet to find a better source for random information anywhere on the web, so i figured i'd ask ya'll a question about my satellite. I have direct TV and my satellite is not working. I have checked everything all the way to the splitter box outside and that stuff is good. I have also checked all of the conections everywhere and they are good. My question is.. is there anywa to test is the coax cable is getting a signal from the reciever without a tester. I know with phone wire you can stick your tounge to it and you'll know if it'* live. Can you do the same thing, or is there a simple way to test. Thanks in advance. Ya'll are the best.

Usually in the main menu, there is a meter to show your signal strength. Check that out.

you probably knocked it out of sync with the sattelite, you need to call someone to get the heading for the sat. and re-calibrate it. that'* my two cents

Gotca.. we had a bad storm last night and that'* when it went out and it'* been out ever since. I can't get anything over 0 on the meter in the main menu. I also know the receiver send out an eletrical signal on the coax line, but i'm not sure if my line is damaged because of the storm. (It'* between a couple of trees). I just want to see if i have any eletrical signal at all at the end of the coax cable where it goes into the satellite so that i can isolate the problem to either the cable between the outside box or something in the satellite its self.

When ours goes out we always test the signal strength first. It could be a L & M (or something like that that goes out easily). Do you have the protection plan on yours? I have it on mine so it doesn't cost me anything for a service call. I've had to have them come out twice recently to redirect the signal. A bad storm threw it out of line with the signal. Call them and they can help you troubleshoot it on the phone.

HEHE, that'* funny. It'* called a LNB. (low noise block converter). some lnb'* have a light on them, if there is power , the led is on. if not, the redneck way of checking if the cable is good is to unhook it from the reciever, put a battery on the cable (+ to the copper core, - to the shield, and see if you see the voltage on the other end. (unhook from lnb and reciever first of course) if you have a splitter by the lnb, unhook that also. you are just checking for continuity on the wire. more then likely, the lnb is toast, cheap to go to walmart and get another. try also unplugging the reciever from power for a couple min, then reapply power.. (internal circuit breaker)

I knew it was something like that. But they say it with a southern accent and I'm listening with yankee ears so it could go either way. LOL
