ok i have a linksys router...need help...i can run it as a gateway and my connection to the internet works...but it looses some speed when its like that...in the config part of hte router 192.168.1.1 crap you can change it to a router...but when i change it to a router my internet connection doesnt work on the computer....how do i do it to get it to work? answers only please

Not exactly sure, but your network card configuration will have to reflect the gateway.....if you changed it, your NIC doesn't have a way to get out? Can you give more details?

details like what????/ i wnat the router to act as a router not a gateway...i just fdisked the pos computer cuz it was makin me mad....so i dropped the bomb on it...workin good now cept i cant get hte router to act as a router...dont know how to configure the nic ....

Our router HAS to act as a gateway for your NIC to use it to get out. Otherwise, you're running the router only as a local network.

The way you have it set up, it can network 4 or 5 pc'* in your home, but no internet. You have to have it configured as a gateway to do that AND use the internet.

ok...so if i put the router as a router...hook a hub up to it and connect my computer to the hub will it work...

Hubs are slow. You need a switch or a router. A router is a switch with gateway capability.....you were trying to set your router up as a switch.

Basics:

HUB: Sends packets of info to ALL computers cuz it'* too dumb to know which PC requested the info. Slows the whole network down.

Switch: Knows which PC wants what, and can distribute that infor more economically without bogging down the network.

Router: Does the same as a switch AND adds internet (gateway to the outside world) capability.

isnt a router suppose to keep the high speed up to all connections? w/o losing speed along the way?

Yes, should be as fast as a switch, faster than a hub.

Onr thing you need to consider on this if you're using cable internet...

Your cable modem must only see one IP address on the computer (router) side, thus the gateway.

Also, each network has only so much bandwidth. The more computers on it accessing the same resource, i.e. the internet, the slower it'* gonna be.

I currently have 2 linksys routers, one is the main( to split to the house) one and the other I just use in my room to split to a couple computers.
I just setup the internet information in the router and it connects as one computer then just chares the connection with the rest. In most cases that is how you have to do it. Since most companies will only give you 1 IP address.

On the other hand the connection WILL slow down since you are sharing with other computers. It shouldn't slow down that much unless you are using more than one computer at the same time.
