Look at the title for each car. On it you'll see a "classification." The first two numbers of the classification represent the price of the car in thousands. So, 23XXXXXXX would be a $23,000 car when brand new.
That value is what your annual registration cost is derived from. I'm willing to bet the cost of your dad'* truck, when new, is less than that of the Bonnie. The state does not reduce that number over time. It stays the same for the life of the car. The only thing that might change would be the multiplier, but that would affect all registered cars.
BTW, I'm positive this is how Michigan does it....not sure about other states.
For what it'* worth, our 99 costs my $95 annually. Firehawk is $138. But our 79 TA is only $37.
ouch... well thank you everyone for explaining it to me!

I don't think Alberta varies the rate by vehicle. My Bonne is about $80, as was my 1979 Firebird, my g/fs 88 Corsica, my brothers 65 Mustang, dad'* 78 Corvette, and mom'* 05 Trailblazer.

i believe NJ goes by the weight class the vehicle is in. For my dad'* bonneville 93 SE {SLE?} i paid one price, but for my SSEi i had to pay more {not sure how much exactly} since it was in a different class.
