make sure you have enough free space on the HDD and it will automatically configure that when you install linux. you can chose to use the rest of the free space for linux, or use the whole disk. if you use the free space you can still keep windows and linux. that is what i would reccomend. you might need windows once in a while, even if the partition for windows is very small its useful to have.
if you have another computer pull up a install tutorial to reference while installing if you need to.

Ive got about 25 gigs free so Ill just use that for now, this is purely for playing around purposes. If i really like it, Ill reformat my PC and use Linux as my primary

Just to add.... I STRONGLY urge you to backup your Windows partition. For some reason, when I would properly partition and install Ubuntu on the same HDD as XP, I would get the BSOD upon starting up XP. So be careful.

I use linux as my daily OS for web browsing, etc. but still need windows for gaming.
i never backed up my windows partitions, and after multiple ubuntu installs i have never had a problem. but its probably a smart idea

I recommend using a boot/partition manager. Personally I like BootIT NG from terabyteunlimited.com... it lets use resize partitions if you need to make some space.
Some folks like to use LILO or GRUB as boot managers.. I like the independence that BootIT NG offers.

Ok so I downloaded that file and tried to install. I reboot with the cd in the drive and I get the ubuntu screen. Then i hit install it says starting linux kernel the bar goes to 100% and then My keyboard and mouse turn off and my monitors go into standby mode. the pc is on though. I cant get it to do anything and I left it like that overnight to see if anything would happen. nothing.
Any advice?
