OK most of you will probably think im crazy but you guys are definatly a way to help me out. I am building a really nice jewlery box for this girl that is by best friend ever (yeah long story) So I am putting a "V" (her first initial) inlaid in the top of the box and i wanted this V to be out of wood. But a special kind of wood. Wood from Iceland. (Yes thats what i said) This is the point at which you all think im nuts. It has to be 4" x 4" by at least 1/4" thick (Or roughly 10cm x 10cm x 1cm for all the friendly internationals ) I would like this wood to be orriginally from iceland (and i think about the only thing they have there is birch) Shes had a very tough life and the thought of someday vacationing in Iceland is her dream. So I would like to make it very special and bring a part of iceland to her. :-?

1. Is this possible?
2. If so would ANYONE know ANYONE that could possibly help me out

I have heard of a special type of wood used for furnishing etc, its found when abandoned logs sink to the bottom of a river or lake before it is milled. Its very expensive tho.

In a pinch, use a nice piece of oak or pine and on the inside of the lid add a high res image of some Icelandic scenary...maybe an engraving of the flag or something on the underside. The idea of the intial on top is really nice. Get nice brass mini hinges for it...and make sure its sanded nice....

This may not be exactly what you are looking for...but its an idea

Yeah im thinking the box will be made outta cherry and im going to put a matte laquer finish on it if i can find it. If the Icelandic wood thing falls through i think im going to use white oak I already have some very nice brass hardware and now the absoultly perfect finishing tougch is to have the V in the ceter made out of authenic Icelandic wood

And for my need of 4x4x.25 even expensive wod shouldnt be too bad but it has to be able to be shipped to Kentucky, USA :?

I'm assuming you've hit all the furniture/woodworking sites on the net? I'm sure they would have forums with people at least aas knowledgeable about that as we do here about our cars.

If you need Birch, any of us from the North or Midwest should be able to get you some. I know Minnesota is chock full of it. WOn't actually be from Iceland, but someplace about as cold...

Here, bud, check this out if you haven't already. This is a lead. They may be able to ship you some Icelandic Birch, Rowan, or Larch, or tell you where to get some. I'd check the email address and the phone number.
