Default 4T80-E questions.... (Aurora)

Ok, So I decided to pass on the Eagle Vision in my other thread, as they decided all of a sudden they wanted $1200 for it.

Anyways, someone tipped me off to a possibly free '97 Olds Aurora. Problem is that the transmission is failing at only 98k (estimated). Is this a common thing for the 4T80-E to fail, or is this a result of abuse? IF I do happen to get the car and determine the tranny to be dead, are they hard to find (JY unit) or am I gonna have to shell out for a rebuilt? Thanks.

I am under the assumption that Mr Ed Morad might have one laying around.....

4t80E failure isn't nearly as common as 65E failure. It could be abuse, or it could just be a fluke. It'* hard to tell. Over at ACNA we don't really have a whole lot of 80E failures to mention.

It'* about the most bullet proof FWD tranny GM has made... The hard parts are much bigger than the 4t-65e-hd'*, the diff is a monster...

They're not as common in a JY either, but not impossible to find i'm sure.

The biggest problem will probably be swapping it w/o a lift. Being built about the same as a caddy.. you probably have to drop the engine/trans/subframe and lift the car off it to swap out.

IMO, it probably was abused. I've known him for 3 years, and since then, he'* gone through 3 cars:
Grand Prix GT - Totaled
Aurora - Tranny died
Accord V6 - Still running, but he revs it RIGHT up to the redline (he didn't with the Aurora, since the V6 is a stick)

Take it as you will, but I believe that he only went around 4k miles in it. I'll be looking at it hopefully tomorrow night.

Yeah I really don't mind dropping the cradle. That will give me a excuse to clean up the crowded engine bay and such. My dad'* friend has a lift in his huge garage, and i can lift the car off the subframe and go on from there.

The 4L/T80-E is the electronic version of the TH400. You have to try and kill them IMO
