if you really want to get serious, get a notary public to notarize it so its official

No matter what, as long as you have it on paper with all the necessary info and both parties sign it, it'* a contract, and it will hold up in court. It doesn't matter if it'* something you just draft yourself.

In addition to the buyer/seller info including addresses, I've put the VIN, color of the car, year, make, model, price, date sold, and odometer reading – pretty much everything that DMVs require on a Bill of Sale.

I've never used anything fancy and have sold quite a few cars over the years. All I do is something like this:

I, (buyer'* name here), am purchasing a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE from Mark XXX in the amount of $2,900 on 5/21/07. VIN: 12345678901234567 with no warranty express, written, or implied. The car is in as-is condition. A deposit in the amount of $500 was issued to Mark XXX to secure the car for final pickup on 5/25/07 at which time the balance is to be paid in full via cash or cashier'* check.

Mark'* Sig
Mark XXX
Address

Buyer'* Sig
Buyer XXX
Address

That'* it. Literally written on a scrap piece of paper. I write out two copies if there'* no access to a copy machine. Nothing fancy, but works.

Agreed, I've written up 2 contracts for the same car, it was very simple, just make sure to list key information: make, model, year, VIN, mileage, colour, owner, seller, price, date and I include a witness signature.

Here in Arkansas the tag office has Bill of Sale forms available at no charge.
