We've been getting hammered by wind tonight, and for the past couple hours, I've been listening to the shingle tearing off the roof and sliding down the other side. Had to move Sean'* van, found a couple shingle had already landed on it .

I swear to God, if they start landing on MY car, I'm going to ***t on the complex manager'* desk. We've had roof damage like seven times since we moved in in Sept 2005. They keep getting the lowest bidder to come in and patch it with the cheapest grey shingles they can find. So, not only does it just rip right off again the next time we get wind, but the whole place looks like it has gray digital camo on the roofs.

Notice how the nail in the center would line up perfectly with the break in the shingle above?
That is exactly the WRONG way to nail a shingle down. Leaves the nail exposed to water. Backs up what I said about the lowest bidder, incompetent f****!
I wonder how much they pocketed by shorting one nail per shingle across the entire complex?

EDIT, the little guy there is Rover, 1/2 of our adopted feline family. He and Gypsy are both a bit spooked by the thudding and skittering noises from the roof...

i'd go into the office anyway and make a complaint.

you don't pay a lot of money to live in a pile of **** building, so why are they cutting corners?

holy crap complain! any warranty?

Well, there is definitely damage on my PA. Looks like it got hit by shingles across the top of the RR window and on the driver'* side of the windshield. Big patterns of scratches. Pretty deep on the windshield, too.
I already talked to the complex manager, and I never heard anyone say the words "Act of God" more times in one sentence. They've stated that they're not liable. I'm waiting for word from the actual owner, and also waiting for them to call me back with their insurance info.

The thing is, I've taken a run around the neighborhoods that surround this complex, and there is almost ZERO damage. One or two turned up shingles out of a couple hundred houses, most of which are DIRECTLY upwind of us.
And that'* the usual story here, too. We get wind, the complexes roofs get stripped, and all around us, there'* NO damage.
So, I am forced to conclude that the roof is seriously out of code.
I've already left messages with Code Enforcement, got numbers for legal assistance lines, and when the neighbors get home, I'll be talking to them.

You can see where shingles from our building flew all the way across our lane and smshed into the opposite building. They cracked siding, broke the lower left screen, and also hit my car...

Here you see the shingles that most likely did the damage, and on the wall above them, the hole where they smashed into the building across the street from us.

Finally, you can see what I mean aout the numerous repairs over the last two years. You can just make out two patches that are totally different shades than the roof and each other.

Hit them with all you've got, get them to pay for everything. It seems like so many people get shafted with condominium rentals around Columbus. I guess the landlords suck everywhere around here. Damn, you've had a bad month, haven't you?

I wouldn't expect much out of the owner. That'* IF you can actually find him. Most apartment complexes are incorporated or owned by an LLC. The purpose is two fold - 1.) to hide the name of the owner(*) and 2.) to put a legal barrier between the owner and the "business". Plus, not to mention, the management company is the party you should be working with on this (they are the "lessor" on your lease). If you find the owner, he'll likely kick you back to the management company. The complex is likely incorporated or held in an LLC by multiple investors so finding the key person will be a challenge.

They will likely file an insurance claim to fix everything damaged to their property. The shingles are probably just sub-par and typical for an investor (cheapest way to get by). If you try to get money from them, they'll most likely tell you to make a claim against your comprehensive coverage on your car(*).

I wouldn't expect you to get far with any level of compensation from their end.

Let'* put it this way, if I file a claim, my agent is gonna wonder why I called. Liability ONLY. I'M BROKE.
And this isn't just sub-par. If they don't know how bad these roofs are, then they got seriously ripped
Anyways, the complex manager is forwarding everything to the owner, I should hear back by the end of the week.
