This is just a big puzzle to me why pontiac bonnevilles are not police cars.

1. Those 3.8l v6s are fuel efficient and very reliable

2. They are Faster than Crown Victorias yet as reliable as them.

3. The trunk is big enough for police equipment

4. They have a better safety rating than Crown Victorias.

The list goes on and on. Its to late to make them police cars now, but what a country it would be full of bonnevilles

Feel free to post some more ideas . I'd love to see your opinion.

A couple things that come to mind...

The Crown Vics are a wider car and I would think less prone to rolling especially when used for purposes such as the pit maneuver.

I would say the Vic has more interior room than a Bonneville.

The Bonnevilles are front wheel drive, compared to the rear wheel drive Vic. As for the GXP, I've been told the N* engine is not a good "fleet" engine, or something to put a ton of miles on which is exactly what police do.

As a retired officer I have driven several variants of police fleet vehicles. The Crown Vic with the Police Interceptor package is a great car. My favorite though was the 1979 Chevy Malibu with the Police Package. Good giddy up, great cornering, great braking and lots of room for two officers and equipment. With cage installed the backseat was tight, but that took the fight out of lots of people who caught a ride in the back.

The one car I hated. The Dodge Diplomat. What a dog!

I was reading an article about police cars last month, and it said that the older cops prefer RWD cars, because that'* what they have the most experience with. Meanwhile, younger officers prefer FWD or AWD cars, because again, that'* what they're used to.

Best guess, in addition to what Tom said, is that the police department'* buyers listen to the older officers more. We may see more FWD police cars as those older officers retire.

Last time i was in the back of a cop car (FWD Impala) i asked Office Long how they compared to the Crown Vics.. He is about 33 yrs old. He said Crown Vic all the way!

Yeah, it seems where I am, I'm seeing the Impala pretty much phasing out the Crown Vic. If I had a choice, it would be rear wheel drive, all the way! But with this new Taurus Police Interceptor, using all wheel drive, I would choose that, plus it'* using the SHO engine. I guess I've never thought about an all wheel drive police interceptor.

Twin Turbo V6 with AWD.. Would be an Awesome car to have
