Default Poll: Extensive Attic or Basement

Hey there folks.. I'm going to be house hunting really soon and one of the things my wife and I have been talking about is looking for a home with a big attic or a big basement... I have family with both and both are biased towards thier choice. What does the BC community think?

which isn't something to take lightly, especially if part of the basement is finished...trust me I know...been through 3 basement floods...

but its still better than a 500degree attic in the middle of the summer

Yet the parents keep putting you back down there. Hmmmm

It depends..is this finished? workspace? Used for room?

What are the things you want to use it for. A walk in kind of finished attic can be nice

basements tend to have more room, because obviously the side portions of the attic are usually much lower due to the roof.

basements are typically dark and only have artificial light coming in, thats not entirely true, but a lot of times it is. I for one like some natural light, and attics usually at least have a couple windows or something.

Attics are also really warm in the winter, and ungodly hot in the summer, whereas basements are typically nice and cool in the summer and really cold in the winter.

A basement seems to be the stereotypical male hideaway, so ill say basement

My intent was to use the basement as a place I could set up a small shop, basically to do all this masculine stuff I can't do in the regular section of the house. I want a finished basement and not some place that crap gets stored if I can avoid it. I'd rather build a shed and store crap in there.

One of the places I went to an open house (Thanks Bill, damn good suggestion) on is on top of a hill with an awesome sunset view of the hudson similar to what my apartment has. It has a tiny attic but a really large basement that walks into the garage, similar to what Boosty has.

Another I was looking at an advertisement for has a bigger kitchen (something important to me), but a large attic.. Basement appears to be smallish.

Basement. It stays a natural lower temp in the summer. You can circulate that air upstairs to cool the house.
