Default Business trip like no other

Follow along, this one gets good...

So here'* the deal, My boss asked me about 2 or 3 weeks ago if I would be willing to fly out to Berwyn PA from Minneapolis this last Tuesday to teach a guy there our new media communications system. I said sure, why not. This would be my first ever paid company business trip. Here'* how it all went down...

1:00 pm - Tuesday: At work, needing to get a bunch of stuff installed before I leave on the flight to PA. Hauled A$$ trying to get it done, but got none of it done. Hrmm, that'* gonna suck when I get back.

5:00 pm Tuesday: Leave home and go to the airport to catch a 7:22pm flight (I like to get their early, just in case). I get to the airport and check in thru the self check-in at NWA. Went pretty smooth so I went to a bar and had a beer while waiting for the flight. This is when I realized that I had forgotten a $20 piece at work that will keep the $1600 camera from working when I get there. Too late now. Going to have to hit up radio shack when I get there.

10:30 pm - Tuesday: Arrive in Philly on time. I follow the crowd to the baggage claim, but for some reason, my 1 bag which has all my cloths and personal effects on it never shows up. I find a NWA attendant and find out my bag is on it'* way to Albuquerque NW. Well, at least I had the stuff I had to have for the next day in my carry on (work stuff, no cloths). My bag would be delivered to me the next afternoon per the NWA agent.

11:00 pm - Tuesday:
I arrive a t Hertz rental car at the airport where I have reserved 2+ weeks in advance a midsized car for that night. (guess where this one is going ) So I get up to the counter and they find my reservation. I ask the lady "so what kind of car will I be getting?". Her lovely reply was (in a mild gangsta voice) "I don't know, whatever they bring up here!". I just shook it off and sat down and waited until the car got pulled up..... 1.5 hours later. They had run out of cars before I got there and didn't bother to tell me. The good news is, once a car became available, I got a 2005/6 Audi A6 with GPS nav and all the extras. Not too shabby.

12:30 am - Wednesday: I leave for a 45 minute drive to the city where the hotel I am staying at actually is. The hotel is literally .5 miles from my final destination in the morning. The drive kinda sucked as I wasn't familiar with the car, and stuff kept beeping and dinging at me. But I made it there.

1:15 am - Wednesday: Go to check into the hotel and guess what. They were overbooked and I was the lucky last one there. They had booked a room for me at another hotel, that was 20 minutes away still. I wasn't in the mood to argue, so I got back in my car, and drove to the other hotel. this place was not easy to find. Good thing I at least had that in car nav unit. Oh, and I passed a Radio Shack on the way there. Made note of that for later.

1:45 am - Wednesday: Finally get to the place and get a room, on the top floor, farthest from anything, but at least it was a room. The elevator there did scare me though. That thing just wasn't right.

2:00 am Wednesday: Leave the hotel to go to the local CVS to get solution and a case for my contacts. The stuff I brought with was still in Albuquerque. Got back 30 minutes later.

2:30 am Wednesday: Finally get to bed.

3:00 am Wednesday: wake up to AC unit starting up and sounding something like a lawnmower.

3:50 am Wednesday: wake up to AC unit starting up and sounding something like a lawnmower.

4:40 am Wednesday: wake up to AC unit starting up and sounding something like a lawnmower.

5:20 am Wednesday: wake up to AC unit starting up and sounding something like a lawnmower.

6:30 am Wednesday:
Gave up and got up for the morning. Packed up and checked out. the original hotel had an opening the second night so I moved back there. I had to go back there eventually. that'* where NWA was sending my luggage... if they ever got it back. Stopped by and got a set of keys on the way to the office.

7:30 am - 4:30 pm Wednesday: To make a short story long, The power flickered a dozen plus times today while trying to setup the hardware, resetting it every time. Found out that one of them was bad, no spares on site, and that server portion of it that was supposed to go in as well was not even getting on the network. So now I am going thru all this and have very little to do now that I am here and stuff ain't working right. Hit up radio shack for the missing adapter. There was more, but I think point made.

5:00 pm Wednesday: Checked into my room, no luggage yet. The hotel manager did send up a complementary food platter that is f'n awesome to say sorry about the mix up though. So right now I am sitting here munching on free food waiting to see if my bag will ever arrive, and debating hitting the bar downstairs for a couple.

So now I am wondering a) Will I make it to the airport in time b) Will I even make it home tomorrow c) If I do, will my luggage be there too d) wondering if I will need to come back and do this all again. So all that said, I think I am going down to the bar.

Sounds like you didn't book through Travelocity

I hate it when things go wrong likethat. I've got a very short fuse to screw-ups that aren't my fault

You have to seek compensation from NWA; check out the contract of carriage since they have to compensate you. Read the document below starting on page 71.
http://www.nwa.com/plan/contract2.pdf
Also, seek additional compensation in the way of a free ticket for all your hassles.

Also, if your hotel room was confirmed, I would also seek copmpensation and/or a voucher for a free stay.

http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/publi...ts.htm#baggage

Delayed bags

If you and your suitcase don't connect at your destination, don't panic. The airlines have very sophisticated systems that track down about 98% of the bags they misplace and return them to their owners within hours. In many cases they will absorb reasonable expenses you incur while they look for your missing belongings. You and the airline may have different ideas of what'* reasonable, however, and the amount they will pay is subject to negotiation.

If your bags don't come off the conveyor belt, report this to the airline before you leave the airport. Insist that they fill out a form and give you a copy, even if they say the bag will be in on the next flight. If the form doesn't contain the name of the person who filled it out, ask for it. Get an appropriate phone number for following up (not the Reservations number). Don't assume that the airline will deliver the bag without charge when it is found; ask them about this. Most carriers set guidelines for their airport employees that allow them to disburse some money at the airport for emergency purchases. The amount depends on whether or not you're away from home and how long it takes to track down your bags and return them to you. If the airline does not provide you a cash advance, it may still reimburse you later for the purchase of necessities. Discuss with the carrier the types of articles that would be reimbursable, and keep all receipts. If the airline misplaces sporting equip- ment, it will sometimes pay for the rental of replacements. For replacement clothing or other articles, the carrier might offer to absorb only a portion of the purchase cost, on the basis that you will be able to use the new items in the future. (The airline may agree to a higher reimbursement if you turn the articles over to them.) When you've checked in fresh foods or any other perishable goods and they are ruined because their delivery is delayed, the airline won't reimburse you. Carriers may be liable if they lose or damage perishable items, but they won't accept responsibility for spoilage caused by a delay in delivery. Airlines are liable for provable consequential damages up to the amount of their liability limit (see below) in connection with the delay. If you can't resolve the claim with the airline'* airport staff, keep a record of the names of the employees with whom you dealt, and hold on to all travel documents and receipts for any money you spent in connection with the mishandling. (It'* okay to surrender your baggage claim tags to the airline when you fill out a form at the airport, as long as you get a copy of the form and it notes that you gave up the tags.) Call or write the airline'* consumer office when you get home.

Lost luggage

Once your bag is declared officially lost, you will have to submit a claim. This usually means you have to fill out a second, more detailed form. Check on this; failure to complete the second form when required could delay your claim. Missing the deadline for filing it could invalidate your claim altogether. The airline will usually refer your claim form to a central office, and the negotiations between you and the airline will begin. If your flight was a connection involving two carriers, the final carrier is normally the one responsible for processing your claim even if it appears that the first airline lost the bag. Airlines don't automatically pay the full amount of every claim they receive. First, they will use the information on your form to estimate the value of your lost belongings. Like insurance companies, airlines consider the depreciated value of your possessions, not their original price or the replacement costs. If you're tempted to exaggerate your claim, don't. Airlines may completely deny claims they feel are inflated or fraudulent. They often ask for sales receipts and other documentation to back up claims, especially if a large amount of money is involved. If you don't keep extensive records, you can expect to dicker with the airline over the value of your goods. Generally, it takes an airline anywhere from six weeks to three months to pay you for your lost luggage. When they tender a settlement, they may offer you the option of free tickets on future flights in a higher amount than the cash payment. Ask about all restrictions on these tickets, such as "blackout" periods and how far before departure you are permitted to make a reservation.

Limits on liability

If your bags are delayed, lost or damaged on a domestic trip, the airline can invoke a ceiling of $2,800 per passenger on the amount of money they'll pay you. (This limit is $2,500 for flights before October 22, 2004.) When your luggage and its contents are worth more than the liability limit, you may want to purchase "excess valuation," if available, from the airline as you check in. This is not insurance, but it will increase the carrier'* potential liability. The airline may refuse to sell excess valuation on some items that are especially valuable or breakable, such as antiques, musical instruments, jewelry, manuscripts, negotiable securities and cash.

On international round trips that originate in the United States, the liability limit is set by a treaty called the Montreal Convention. This treaty also governs liability on international round trips that originate in another country that has ratified this Convention, and one-way trips between the U.*. and such a country. Unless you buy excess valuation, the airline'* baggage liability on a trip covered by the Montreal Convention is limited to 1,000 "Special Drawing Rights" per passenger. The value of the SDR changes daily; see www.imf.org.

This international limit also applies to domestic segments of an international journey. This is the case even if the domestic and international flights are on separate tickets and you claim and re-check your bag between the two flights. Keep in mind that the liability limits are maximums. If the depreciated value of your property is worth less than the liability limit, this lower amount is what you will be offered. If the airline'* settlement doesn't fully reimburse your loss, check your homeowner'* or renter'* insurance; it sometimes covers losses away from the residence. Some credit card companies and travel agencies offer optional or even automatic supplemental baggage coverage.
